“Sad, isn’t it? All those missing women and children. I can’t picture what their families are going through.” Even though I was looking for my family, it wasn’t as though I was being held captive away from them. Not really at least.

“I try to help as many as I can.”

“The ones that you do help are fortunate to have you. I feel horrible taking up your time with my request. It seems so minute compared to some of theirs,” I said.

He shook his head. “There is no place else I want to be than here with you.”

I smiled because I knew he wasn’t talking about work. He was talking about us, here and now.

The topic changed so many times throughout the night, but laughter was at the center of it all.

“You came in third in a hot dog eating contest?” I said, making a face.

“It’s not much different from your pie-eating contest,” he said.

“Of course it is. Who doesn’t love pie?” I said. “But who knows what really are in hot dogs? Not me. I’ve never even had one.”

“You’re joking, right?” I shook my head. “That’s it. For our next date, we are having New York wieners.”

“I think I’m busy that day,” I joked, knowing that I would make time and eat whatever he ordered if it meant more time with him.

“Yeah. I guess you don’t start with stuffed lobster tail then move to wieners.”

“How about I cook for us next time?”

“You have tomorrow night off too,” he grinned.

“I have no idea what it will be, but I promise you, it will be better than wieners,” I joked.

He patted his stomach and said, “You have no idea what you are missing.”

“And I have no problem keeping it that way either,” I replied.

And it wasn’t just the food. I found we had more in common than I thought. We both liked anything to do on the ocean, but not necessarily sitting by it. We were active people, but unfortunately, both were so busy that we hardly got to enjoy the things we loved to do. At least tonight was different.

The fact that Damien had gone through all this trouble to make the night magical for us was just another reason to like him. He checked all my boxes as to what I wanted in a man. It was as though the universe was playing matchmaker. But what the universe wasn’t considering was that it wasn’t going to last forever.Heck maybe all we have is tonight.

He didn’t need to say a word. I knew the yacht had turned and we were headed back to the dock. “I hate for this to end. I’ve really enjoyed myself.”

Damien said, “The night’s not over yet.”

I knew that. We had at least twenty minutes to get back to the dock, and then the ride to my place. That still wasn’t enough time for me.

As I feared, in hardly any time at all, the yacht docked, and we headed back to my place. The ease of our conversation from earlier wasn’t present. The closer we got to my place, the quieter we got. And when he pulled into my driveway and put the car in park, he wasn’t even looking at me.

All there was left to do was to kiss goodnight and say goodbye. It was a night to remember, One I will never forget.

CHAPTER21

MaKayla

What were we doing just sitting in my driveway? Was he battling what to say or do next as I was? I could thank him for a wonderful time and go inside alone. But that wasn’t what I wanted and I had a feeling it wasn’t what he did either.

“I just remembered something very important,” I said.

That got his attention and he turned to look at me. “What is it?”

Smiling, I said, “I never made you that coffee. I always pay my debts. Why don’t you come inside, and I’ll prepare one for you now.”
