“And the woman?” I asked.

“I have not been able to find her,” he said, but never mentioned MaKayla.

Bennett stated, “He knows.”

“Fuck. Is there anything you don’t know, Damien?” Steven snapped.

He was thrown by the line of questioning, but I wasn’t going to change just to make it easier for him. This call was about me getting answers. Until I had what I wanted, needed, then my guard was going to be up no matter what Bennett said.

“Yes. Why have you been looking for her?” I asked.

“Because his daughter is all I have left of him. He wasn’t a bad guy. He was a boy who had been so abused that he had no fight left in him. My father is to blame for all that, not Michael.”

It was time to tell him. “Your niece is alive and well. But I need to confirm what her mother told me. What do you know about how they left Tabiq?”

“How? I have not yet learned that, but I do know that my brother provided the means for them not to just leave, but to thrive away from Tabiq.”

“That he did. He had new identities created for them and set them up to be financially independent.”

“Sounds like Michael. His letter had made it clear that he wanted the best for his child and her mother. It was all about keeping her away from our father’s grasp. Since he’s dead too, so is the threat.”

“But I am not sure her mother will ever feel that way. She has dedicated her life to protecting her daughter from your father, and your family. Hell, until earlier, I wasn’t sure what type of person you were either.”

“I’m not a saint, but I amnothinglike my father.”

“Good.”

“I want to see her,” he said.

“It’s not that easy, Steven. Learning about you will open up a lot of questions that will have very painful answers.” I’m afraid of what it will do to her. She has wanted a family for so long, only to learn how dysfunctional hers was, might crush her.

“I’m okay with her not knowing the details of how she was conceived. No child wants to know that. But I do want her to know that he loved her. He did everything he could to keep her safe. That meant keeping her away from him. I can’t imagine how difficult it was, but he chose her,” Steven said.

“Steven, I can’t give you her information, but I’ll let you know when you two can meet,” I stated.

“Damien, I don’t know who the hell you are, but she ismyfamily,” Steven said firmly.

“And I am the man who loves her and won’t let anyone, not even her family, hurt her. Understood?” I warned.

“I...misunderstood your interest in all this. If you really love her, then I will trust you to do what is best for her, just like Michael did,” he replied.

“I’ll be in contact,” I said, and Bennett ended the call. “Why that smug look on your face?” I asked.

“So, you love her?”

“Fuck off,” I snarled. “I have bigger things to think about right now.”

“I don’t know about that. I think you telling her how you feel is pretty big. But what do I know? I’m just a happily married man,” he replied. “But keep me updated on what you decide to do with the information. The Hendersons will be happy to assist in the reunion in Tabiq.”

“Thanks. I think I need to speak to her mother first. Even though I want to be the one to tell MaKayla, I think it really needs to come from Venus.”

If she refuses, then I will have no choice but to intervene.

CHAPTER23

MaKayla

Damien should be here any minute. Dinner was almost done and the house smelled wonderful. Not that I wanted him to leave, but if he had stayed this morning, odds were that we never would’ve left the bed and dinner would've had to be ordered in.
