Before he even picked up one, his cell phone rang. When he pulled it out of his pocket and looked at the caller ID, I saw his expression change.

“Is it Damien?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Brian. Sorry, I need to take this.”

“If it’s about me, you might as well take it in here so I know what’s going on,” I said firmly.

Draven answered the phone and said, “Hi Brian. I’m here with Ms. Prada.”

“Please call me Venus,” I stated. I appreciated the sign of respect but being called Ms. Prada made me feel so old.

I couldn’t hear what Brian said, but I saw the seriousness on Draven’s face. “And what are you planning on doing?” He paused and then added, “Okay. Keep me posted.”

Once he ended the call, I placed my hands on my hips and said firmly, “This is my life. If you’re going to speak about me, then I want to know both sides of the conversation.”

“I have no problem with updating you. Brian is going to reach out to the PI tomorrow and find out why he’s looking for you. That’s all.”

“Did he say where the PI is from?” I asked. “Is he from Halifax?”

“Portland, Maine.”

Never been there before. Whenever MaKayla and I travelled it was always someplace with tropical temps, not anything like Halifax. But we did get a lot of tourists from Maine at that restaurant. I am sure some of them could have been from Portland. Why would any of them look for me? Thatsure would be an extreme if they didn’t like the food. I fought back a snicker at my own inner thoughts. I know this situation isn’t supposed to be funny, but I wasn’t ready to face the fact I really might be in danger. Not again. Not ever.

“And Brian thinks that he can get this man to open up to him, why?”

Draven snickered. “He’s FBI. I have a feeling he’s going to use that as leverage.”

“But this isn’t an FBI case. We don’t even know if it is a case at all. Just someone looking for me. You’re all making this into something bigger than it needs to be,” I stated.

“You don’t need to worry about that. Let us do our job. You just enjoy your time here in Tabiq,” Draven replied.

I would if you would all stop making that impossible.

“I no longer feel like going shopping. It’s been a very busy few days and all I want to do is go back to cottage I’m stay at and relax.”And be far away from anyone who is going to be reminding me that not everything is perfect. That I’m not as free to live my life as I had thought.

That call from Brian had sucked the joy out of having company tonight. I knew why Draven would be sitting at the cottage with me, and it wasn’t for a home-cooked meal, not that I ever really believed that was all it was anyway.

“Are you sure? I was looking forward to seeing more of the town,” he tried convincing me. It wasn’t working.

“Maybe I can show you around the island tomorrow,” I said. Nothing he said would change my mind.

“That’s fine. Why don’t I give you a ride home.”

“I know my way,” I said. Raising my hand I added quickly, “And I don’t need a babysitter. This was my home for eighteen years. Nothing is going to happen to me here.”Not again.

“Your daughter isn’t going to be happy if she finds out I let you leave the resort on your own.”

I smiled. “Well, you better not tell her then, because you’re family now, and if she gets angry, you won’t have a place to hide.”

He grumbled. “Damien did warn me that Prada women are headstrong.”

“That we are. I just have more experience with it than MaKayla. I picked up one suitcase and said, “I’ll let you carry the two bags, though. I mean you’re here anyway, might as well let you help.”But the help ends with the bags.

Draven carried my bags to the car and placed them in the back seat. He stood there looking at me. “I wish you would let me at least drive you home.”

“This isn’t my home. It’s just where I am for now. Do you have my cell phone number?” I asked.

“I do.”
