“Neither was I. But here we are.” He reached over and took my hand in his. “Venus, if you tell me honestly that you have no interest in spending time with me, then I won’t ask again. I’ll leave Tabiq tomorrow, and you won’t hear from me again either,” he said.

My head pounded. That wasn’t what I wanted. Here lies the problem. I’m not sure what I want. His gentle touch clouded my thoughts. I could pull my hand away. I could tell him to get out. But instead, I entangled my fingers with his. It was the only answer I could give him at that moment.

We sat there for a few minutes just holding hands. It was all we had to give. But the sun was starting to set and even I knew that we shouldn’t be out driving alone in the dark. This tender moment needed to come to an end.

“Yes,” I said, breaking our silence.

“Excuse me?”

“Yes, I will spend tomorrow with you.”

I felt his hand tighten in mine. “Thank you, Venus. I promise you won’t regret it.”

I’m not so sure about that.

His hand slipped away from mine, and he finally got out of the car. “What time should I come to pick you up?” I asked.

“Whenever you wish. I’ll be here. Sweet dreams, Venus,” he said and shut the door.

Not sure if my dreams are going to be sweet or not, but I knew they were going to be filled with him.

As I pulled away, I knew I was going to lose my internal battle the moment he wouldn’t get out of my car. Mostly because I couldn’t imagine him leaving and not seeing him ever again. But as far as regrets went, I knew we were both going to have them. Just hoped when they hit, they didn’t hurt too badly.

Before I even got back to the cottage, my cell phone rang. Looking at the caller ID I smiled. “Hello, MaKayla. I didn’t expect to hear from you.”

“Why not? You know I’m worried about you. Damien is still trying to find out who is looking for you,” she said.

Do I tell her? If I don’t, they are going to spend their honeymoon on something that isn’t a problem. “I was just about to call you. There’s no reason to look any longer. I found out who it is. There is no threat. You just go and enjoy yourself.”

“What do you mean you found who it is?”

“Just what I said. I know who was looking for me. Everything is okay,” I replied.

“Who is it?” she asked, not giving up.

“He is an old friend. He was just worried about me and was trying to find me to make sure I was okay. Now he knows I am, and he doesn’t have to worry any longer. All is good,” I said.

“So, it’s a man. A man was so worried he hired a PI to find you? Wow, that’s romantic. You have to tell me all about him,” she said.

“No, I don’t. And you need to get back to your husband. I’ll see you next week when you get back. And don’t try arguing with me, because I’m not telling you anything else right now.”

“Fine. But I would feel a lot better knowing about this so-called mystery friend of yours,” she sighed.

“And you will. Later,” I said.

“I love you, Mom. Glad you’re not in any danger,” she said.

Just in danger of breaking my own heart.

“So am I. Love you too and tell Damien I said no more work until after the honeymoon is over. And even though I appreciate Draven hanging around, he needs to enjoy his vacation too, and stop worrying about me.”

“I’ll tell him. Can’t make any promises. But when I see you, you and I have a lot of catching up to do.”

With any luck, I’ll have only good things to say.
