“Of course not.” My hotel was only a few blocks away. “I’ll see you shortly.” Ending the call, I texted Declan and then headed right out to meet my daughter.

I knew she had her concerns about Declan. She probably wanted to voice them before he showed up. I’d listen, but I won’t let her disrespect him. He was a good man. She didn’t have to like him, but she must show him respect. I raised her that way.

It wasn’t long before I was knocking on their door. When MaKayla opened it, she practically pulled me inside and wrapped her arms around me. Tears were streaming down her face, and I looked past her to Damien who was just smiling.

These had to be happy tears, or he would’ve been consoling her.

I patted her back and said, “I’m here. Now let me inside and you can tell me why you’re crying.” MaKayla didn’t let me go right away, but Damien came and helped to get her off me. I looked at him so puzzled, but he was still just smiling. That eased my mind greatly.

She held my arm, and we went to sit on the couch. At no point did she let me go. I sat there quietly and patiently waiting.

“I...I don’t know how to tell you this,” she said.

“I find the best way is to just say it,” I told her.

MaKayla put her hand on her stomach and said, “I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a grandmother.”

My eyes watered, and then the tears flowed. “A grandmother? Really?” Damien nodded. “I am so happy for you both. How far along are you?” I asked.

MaKayla blushed. “The doctor said I’m almost three months. I had no idea I was pregnant when I got married a couple of weeks ago. I thought that I was emotional and sick because of the stress of the wedding. That and all the weird Tabiqian food I was eating. But nope. It’s a baby. A baby girl.”

“You’re having a little girl. Oh, I can’t wait to go shopping for her. I loved shopping for you. All those cute dresses with all those ruffles,” I said.

I had no plans of moving to the States. I actually had been thinking about going back to Canada. But being a grandmother, I had a responsibility again. This changed everything. I’d hate to move to New York, but what choice did I have now?None if I want to see my grandchildren all the time.

“I told you she would be happy,” Damien said.

I looked at MaKayla. “Why would you think I wouldn’t be happy?” I asked.

“I...was pregnant before I got married. I know you wanted me to wait until we were married,” she said.

I chuckled. “And you think I believe you had?”

MaKayla’s mouth gaped open. Damien burst out laughing. She shot him a warning look. “It’s not funny.”

“Oh, it is,” he replied.

I said softly to him, “Careful. She’s pregnant. You won’t win, even if you think you did, you’ll lose.” Of course, that really made me think twice about Declan coming here for dinner. MaKayla was already very emotional. The last thing I wanted was for him to feel attacked about what happened when we were sailing. “I think this calls for a celebration. Why don’t I message Declan and tell him we can do this another time.”

“No. Tonight is good. We’re looking forward to meeting him,” Damien said.

MaKayla nodded. “Agreed. He’s important to you, Mom. That makes him important to us too. And before you tell me that you’re just friends, remember that I’m in a delicate condition and you should be straightforward with me.”

“You’re pregnant. That doesn’t mean I have to dance around your feelings and what you want all the time,” I reminded her. Before Damien could say anything, I added, “That’s your role.”

“I had a feeling you were going to say that,” he sighed. “But MaKayla is right. Declan should come tonight.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t say anything about the baby,” I replied.

“It’s okay if you tell him. We’re going to tell Damien’s parents and his brother Draven tomorrow. Did you know he’s still in Tabiq?”

“Really? Why? I haven’t been there in two weeks,” I said.

“Shockingly, he likes it there. So instead of Damien having to travel back and forth, Draven will be there doing all the initial interviews and gathering as much information as possible, and Damien will take over,” MaKayla said.

“I never thought I’d be partners with my brother.” He wrapped an arm around MaKayla and said, “Then again, I never thought I’d be married and about to become a father either.”

“Life is full of changes,” I said. “I’m learning that myself.”
