“We won’t know until we know why she left. If someone found out who she really is, maybe she felt as though she had no other option but to go back into hiding. For all I know, she’s assumed a new name,” I stated.

Jones was in deep thought, but then said, “Give me all the information you have on her. Where she was, who she is, and every single detail you can think of. From her being in Halifax right back to this place called Tabiq. It’s not a country I am familiar with, but I plan on changing that.”

“I’ve only been there once and from what I saw, it was in political turmoil. The law there isn’t as it is in the states.”

“Meaning there is none?” he asked.

“From what she’d told me, if the police come to your door, it’s not to help. They lived in fear of them.”

“So it wasn’t just Phil Morse that she was running from. It was Tabiq as well,” he stated. “I guess we can cross off going back home off the list of places she went.”

I couldn’t imagine her returning there but I honestly don’t know where she would go if she felt in danger. She didn’t know she still had me.

“I’ve got no idea where to even start looking. That’s what I’m hiring you for. And if you do find her, I don’t want her to know that she is being looked for. I just need to know she is safe. That she and her daughter are okay,” stated firmly.

“And it doesn’t matter if I keep her location to myself as well?” he inquired.

That didn’t sit well with me, but I got it. He was being hired to find her, not to divulge where she was. “As long as you can guarantee she is okay, then I’m fine with that.”

He knew I was lying, but what choice did I have? I needed his help, and he already knew more than I thought I would share. I added, “But if you feel as though there is any chance that they are still in danger, I need to know.”

“For what reason? You said they are not anything to you,” he threw back in my face.

Letting out a warning growl, I replied, “If that were the case, I wouldn’t be here, would I?”

“Exactly. I just needed to hear you say it. Now, let’s talk about everything you know, and don’t leave anything out. Even if you don’t think it means anything, it might to me,” he stated.

I spent the better part of the morning doing what he said. All I could do was hope that what I provided him with was enough. Now, I had to wait. Patience, he said. Ha. That’s not something I have much of. Not when it comes to protecting people I care about.

Even though you’ll never know it, I will always care about you.

CHAPTER3

Venus

“What do you mean you’re not going on your honeymoon? Did something happen? Are you not feeling well?” I said, placing a worried hand on her forehead to check if she had a fever. “You don’t have a temperature, but you do look tired.”

“I am very tired. I couldn’t sleep at all,” MaKayla replied. “That’s why we are not going. We need to be here with you.”

“With me? That’s not what a newlywed is supposed to do. Youneedto get on that jet and go on your honeymoon. The last thing I want is the two of you hanging around me all the time.”

“Mom, you don’t understand. Wecan’tleave you. Not now.”

There was a look of panic in her eyes that I had somehow missed before. I turned to Damien and asked, “What’s going on?”

“It appears that someone has been looking for you. We haven’t found out who or why, but until we do, I want to be close,” he replied.

I hadn’t told anyone where we were going for good reason. This was part of my life that I wanted to keep private. Not that I was ashamed of being from Tabiq, but there was that shame I still carried as to why I had to leave Tabiq, and what had happened to me when I was here long ago.

“No one knows how to find me. I’m not worried.”

MaKayla said, “You should be. It could be anyone.”

“It probably is something I forgot to do with taxes. I thought I filled out all the forms and paid for everything, but it is possible I missed something. I’m sure that’s all it is. We all know that there was only one person who I needed to hide from and he’s no longer alive.” I was finally free to come and go as I wish, and no way was I ever going to be forced to hide again.

“If it is that simple, that’s a good thing, but a financial institution isn’t going to hire a private investigator to find you,” Damien said.

That was a different story. “I...I don’t know why anyone would be looking for me.” Even though a lot of people knew me in Halifax, it wasn’t as though I had become close to anyone in particular. I was warm and friendly, but never talked about my personal life. Why would any of them miss me?They wouldn’t.
