“But you think she’s definitely going to lose something?” I asked.

“I think her magic is stronger than mine. And strong magic always leaves some mark.”

Shit.

“We need to get back to them, then,” I said bluntly.

“We do. But until you can control your power well enough not to burn your clothing off in front of my friends, we cannot.”

I rolled my eyes at him. “Dove is more important than my nudity,Odin.”

It still felt strange calling him that, but I hoped I’d get used to it.

“My instincts disagree. And I’d think it would be worse for Dissiri to watch me end her uncle’s life for seeing you bare than it would be to not have me at her side when she loses her hearing.”

I scoffed. “She’snotgoing to lose her hearing.” She was so… perfect. And sweet. And silly. I hated the thought of something happening to cause her pain, or make her sad.

“I hope not,” Quake agreed. “But we have no control over it.”

“It wouldn’t be that big of a deal for them to see me naked,” I argued.

“Velvet,” he said in a low, furious voice, after stopping abruptly. “Iwill never have the chance to see you naked, and you are my mate. The other half of mysoul. If I don’t get to see you bare, the other kings sure as fuck don’t get to either. To me, itisa big deal.”

I… had never thought about it that way.

But I understood what he was saying. I understood that possessiveness. Mostly because I kind of felt that way about him too, even if I wasn’t ready to say it aloud.

“Alright,” I said quietly.

A few moments passed before we resumed walking, his grip on my fingers deathly tight.

“I shouldn’t have lost my temper,” Quake said quietly, as we walked. “I’m sorry.”

“Everyone loses their temper sometimes. If I were in your shoes, I would be a hell of a lot angrier than you are.”

He gave me a dark chuckle. “I am far angrier than I seem, Velvet. I’ve just had a lot of time to learn how to ignore it.”

And well… I understood that, too.

“Ivy said that sometimes fae regain what the magic took from them after they’ve completed the bond with their mate,” I said. “If I remember correctly, at least.”

“It’s happened before, but it’s extremely rare. The number of fae strong enough to have their magic affect them that way is minuscule—and there’s only one story I’ve ever heard about someone who regained her hearing after completing the mating bond.”

I waited.

After he sighed, he told the story. “An air queen, long ago, lost her hearing to her magic. When fate brought her to her fated mate, they fought the bond for a few weeks before succumbing. They went through the mating process, and while they were making love to seal the connection, her hearing returned.”

Damn.

My heart pounded a bit faster, after hearing that.

“So we’ll go seal the bond, and try our hand at sex. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, we’ll still have enjoyed the sex, right?”

“Unless you hate it and never want me to touch you again,” Quake—Odin—drawled, bringing me back to our conversation earlier.

“You already promised to make it good for me,” I reminded him.

“And told you I was in no rush.”
