And grew.

He couldn’t see me with his eyes, but I felt like he stared into my soul.

I wanted to stay in those flames for the rest of my life.

But something told me that if I did, he would stomp right into the fire and refuse to walk out of it without me… no matter what it cost him.

Suddenly, everything around me seemed to fade.

The fire grew louder and louder, engulfing me, and all that I knew. It blazed through my bones and blood, changing me.

Transforming me.

Consuming me.

It burned, and I burned with it.

Chapter2

Quake

“How much longer do we wait?”Ayla asked. “Are we sure she’s even alive at this point?”

“She’s alive.” The growl that escaped me was fierce. “I’d be gone if she wasn’t.”

A moment of silence followed.

More than three days had passed since my female walked into the fire. We had to be nearing the record amount of time any fae had spent within the heart of their element.

And my Velvet had to be nearing the end of her sanity. She hadn’t been consumed by the fire yet, but that didn’t mean it was impossible.

“Flood says that she’ll stay inside the flames until she chooses to come out, or you get her out,” Dove offered. The small impacts of her footsteps on the ground warned me that she was coming toward me, and I held out a hand as she reached me.

Her tiny palm slipped into mine.

Storm and Harper would meet us here any day now. They were celebrating their mating bond—a fact that I would have envied, a few weeks earlier.

Before I learned how I’d wronged my Velvet.

And the reason that she would never want to be mine.

But with my female still inside the flames, the chance of her survival was growing more dire by the hour, which meant it was time for me to act.

Dove squeezed my hand lightly, and I squeezed hers back.

Flood and I couldn’t converse as quickly or easily as the rest of the kings, but he could read lips, and he could form words on the earth when he needed to speak to me.

We didn’t need to exchange words though; we both knew I couldn’t risk waiting any longer.

I turned my head toward Flood, so he could see my lips as I said, “I have to go into the flames.”

Dove sighed beside me. “Okay.”

“Wait with Flood and Ayla, Little Bird.” I released her hand.

“Is it safe?” She sounded nervous.

Truthfully, no. It wasn’t entirely safe. Fire did affect stone, despite the fact that I was fireproof.
