“Yeah, I’m trying not to worry about it right now. Anyway, I had a question.” I grabbed a piece of fruit out of the bowl, to give myself something to do and make the request feel less awkward. “Would you be willing to teach me about my magic? Quake tried, and it helped a lot, but I still feel it constantly. It boils under my skin, and I’m worried I won’t be able to keep it under control forever.”

“Of course.” He looked at Ivy. “We’ll move your training outside, so I can keep translating for Flood while I teach Margo.”

She grinned. “Sweet. I’m tired of being cooped up in this big ole’ stone building anyway.”

He chuckled. “Get used to it, Vriva. Wood and fabric doesn’t survive long in my castle, remember?”

Her grin faded a little. “Is it made up of stone slabs like this too?”

“Not entirely. There are windows; a lot of them. Storm will put windows in here, too, though. This is just the beginning.”

His words struck me.

This is just the beginning.

It was true, wasn’t it?

The kings had only just regained their sanity, and started fixing the land.

Their insanity was kind of like a burnt bridge.

And we were still at the beginning of so many new paths.

For me, learning my magic, falling in love, connecting our minds, and moving somewhere new? Those were all second chances. Opportunities to make things different, to be better.

Hope swelled in my chest with that thought, that idea.

A burnt bridge is an excuse to take a new path.

And I was honestly excited to see where those new paths would take me.

We ateand chatted for a few more minutes before we headed out. After finding Flood, we all made our way to the forest.

Ayla ended up coming with us too, along with an earth fae woman I had never met before but who seemed decent enough.

We all spread out far enough that we wouldn’t injure each other. Ivy and Flood waded into the river nearby, and Tariq translated his instructions to her for a minute before he led me to the biggest clearing near enough to the river that he could see his mate.

We stopped, and he studied me. “Your magic feels strong,” he finally said, slipping his hands into his pockets.

I grimaced.

Did I want strong fire magic?

No, I did not.

“Have you tested your limits yet?” he asked.

My grimace deepened.

Testing my limits sounded like a good way to lose control completely.

But I shook my head, because Flame was the one who was teaching me. If anyone could shut down my magic in the situation that it did get out of hand, it was probably him.

“What did Quake tell you about your fire?”

I shrugged. “Not a whole lot. He said that the fire will try to take control of me. That I need to keep a hold on my emotions to control the flames.”

Flame scowled. “He’s wrong. Wipe that shit from your mind.”
