Quake’s mate.

Odin’smate.

And slowly, my memories of the last few months came trickling back.

My memories of my Earth life came faster, so fast that they roared, and burned.

Panic coursed through me as I realized what was happening.

Quake was inside the flames—he was looking for me.

How long had he been inside them?

How long could he survive this way?

The fire dropped me when I urged it to, and I plummeted. A groan tore through me when I landed on my ass.

Warm, strong arms were on me a moment later.

Aroundme.

Hauling me out of the fire, away from the flames.

We were both covered in soot when we emerged, finding the sun burning down on us.

But my eyes were locked on his face, and his hands were moving desperately over my skin as he made sure I was okay.

“I’m fine,” I told him quietly, dropping my head against his shoulder.

The exhaustion was too much.

And even in that moment, there were flames dancing over my skin. Over Quake’s, too.

I could feel them, but when I tried to get them to fade or vanish, they didn’t obey.

My skin was bare; my dress had burned away long ago. And Quake’s clothes had too, I assumed.

“Margo and I will need to retreat until she can control her flames,” he called to Dove, Ayla, and Flood. “Little bird, tell Storm that I’ll find you all when we’re ready.”

“Okay. Be safe!” she called back.

And with that, the ground swallowed us whole.

I suckedin deep lungfuls of air when the land spit us back out. A shudder ripped down my spine as the feeling of beinginsidea rock pulsed in my veins.

“Never again,” I panted to Quake, scrambling out of his arms and then crashing to my knees. “Never again.”

“Alright.” He stepped back, giving me space while his hands lifted as if in surrender. He was totally naked (except for the fireproof, magical fingerless gloves all fae wore constantly, me included), and ridiculously sexy. It took a crazy amount of effort to stop myself from staring at him.

The silence between us was heavy as I caught my breath.

Finally, I lifted my head and looked around.

We were in an apartment-sized underground cavern. A large river flowed rapidly off to my left, and above it, there was no wall or other barrier.

To my right, there was a small kitchen, and a door that looked like it might lead into a bathroom. Near the kitchen, there was a thick mattress with soft-looking blankets.

I was exhausted.
