There was a lot of shit to do, and so far, I was failing at most of it. At least I could control my earth magic. That was a bonus, I supposed.

Considering that Flood’s kingdom seemed hell-bent on keeping us apart as much as possible, I would probably need that magic at some point. Maybe just to score myself a ticket into the earth fae kingdom, though.

“I read your laws,” I added, walking faster as the knife jabbed closer to my skin. “Flood gave me the book. I made sure. Nothing in it says that earth fae aren’t allowed in the public baths. I can show you the page about it, and—”

The tip of the knife cut into my back, catching me so off-guard that I stumbled and crashed to my knees. The searing pain near my spine told me that the stumbling had only buried the weapon further into my skin, and I fought the hiss of pain that wanted to emerge.

“Flood is going to kill you,” I told the guard, flashing him a glare over my shoulder. “I wasn’t doing anything illegal. Stabbing a chick for being in a public place, though? Definitely not legal.”

He pulled his knife out, and I bit my lip hard to stop myself from crying out.

After nearly three months with the water fae, I was on my way to becoming a pro at sign language—but I was absolutely shit with the fae. The other lands were welcoming, but this one?

Not so much.

Hell, not atall.

They had been trying to run me out since day one, and nothing I’d done had changed that.

The ground rumbled beneath me, and I frowned as I tapped into the magic.

That rumble definitely hadn’t been because of me. I legitimately wasn’t strong enough to make it happen.

“What the hell?” I whispered, closing my eyes and trying to scope out the land like Quake had taught me. I wasn’t strong enough to see much, though, and couldn’t find the source.

The ground rumbled again, harder—and then a savage, deafening roar filled the air as the rumbling grew stronger.

When the roar ended, the rumbling stopped…

And the fae guard grabbed me by the hair. His face was white as he jerked my head back, holding the knife to my throat. His expression was somewhere between furious and terrified as he snarled, “You revived Heliai?”

“What? No way! I have barely any magic, buddy, so it’s not remotely possible. Even if I wanted to—which I don’t—there’s no way I would do that.”

He glowered at me, jerking me to my feet by my hair and storming toward the castle. I struggled to keep up with him, being yanked backward as I hollered protests.

“The king will punish you for this, mate or not,” the guard snarled at me.

I resisted the urge to snarl back,“At least I’ll get to see the bastard for the first time in nearly a week.”

Instead, I kept my mouth shut and let the asshole drag me to my mate, trying to figure out if there was actually a chance I might have woken the Mother of all Monsters somehow.
