“I’d do everything I could do to help you, brother. But my funds are still in the building-a-nest stage.”

Colby came from nothing and was slowly trying to save money, but as ranch hands, they weren’t paid a big salary, just enough to get by. Of course, Mrs. Lillian had bequeathed to them each a nice bonus for helping her run the ranch after her husbands died.

Nathan had told them just as soon as the will was probated and the land sold, they would receive a lump cash sum. How much he had no idea. But probably not enough to buy this property.

Walking into the living area of their small home, they both sank into chairs. Normally, they watched television and then went to bed, but tonight was an exception.

Tonight, their world had been impacted by a beautiful brunette with flashing emerald eyes and lashes that seemed to sweep into next week.

“I guess we’ll soon know her plans regarding the ranch,” Colby said.

“Yes,” Preston acknowledged. “But, damn, that woman is stunning. If only we could show her the true meaning of Blessing, Texas. Of our traditions and beliefs.”

Colby chuckled. “I’m afraid I ruined that for us. But I’m glad now you understand.”

Oh, yes, Preston had taken one look at her and wanted to roll her back onto the top of that car and taste those luscious breasts that were calling to him. Yank down her jeans and sink himself deep within her.

But he was a gentleman, and a good man didn’t act on his baser instincts until the woman said yes.

“When is your sister getting married?” Colby asked.

“In a week,” Preston replied, his heart warming. Hard to believe his little sister was marrying her men. They were stand-up guys and she would be well taken care of. Her two husbands would not allow anything bad to happen to her. All Preston wanted was her happiness.

“What if we invited Miss Fancy Pants to go with us to the wedding? Then she could get a real idea of what Blessing is like. Maybe, somehow, we can convince her to stay and not sell the ranch,” Colby said.

If only. But that girl from New York was used to a much different kind of life. The hustle and bustle of a large metropolitan city. Not the quiet and peacefulness of the country. She probably thought they were hicks even though Preston had gone to college.

But he’d returned home just as quickly as he could. And yes, he enjoyed being a ranch hand. He knew all the procedures for running a successful ranch operation, but he hadn’t been able to put his learning to use. Not yet.

The Parkers were old fashioned and he respected their wishes. But if he could, he would carry this ranch or his own into the next century.

“What if we took her horseback riding and showed her the ranch?” Preston asked.

Colby laughed. “Does she even know how to ride a horse?”

There was that. But he would gladly teach her.

“Don’t know, but I guess we can find out. If not we’ll put her on the tamest horse we have.”

“Or she could ride with one of us as we showed her the ranch,” Colby said. “Snug and safe up against my cock.”

Preston laughed. “I don’t think that’s a safe place at all.”

“No, but it’s a satisfying place,” he said grinning.

They sat for a few moments in silence, each man contemplating the beautiful Miss Parker. Preston knew it would be dangerous to spend too much time with her. He would get ideas of how to show her the ways of Blessing which were not like where she came from.

“New York City,” Preston said. “Why there? We had a chance if she’d come from someplace western, but the Big Apple is not exactly for girls who live a country life.”

“That’s the damn truth,” Colby said. He got up and glanced out the window. “She’s in the bedroom. All curled up in that big bed. She’s got to be lonely there.”

That bed was perfect. Large enough for the three of them. It was best he put that right out of his mind. No sense in dwelling on something that would never happen with a New York City girl.

Preston glanced at his friend. In the last two years, he’d seen so many good changes in the man. When he first came to work for the Parkers, Preston hadn’t trusted him. A man from prison with nothing and nowhere to go. A desperate man trying to start fresh.

But now, he’d filled out, learned some skills, and even settled into the ranching life. If they lost these jobs, Preston wasn’t certain what would happen to Colby.

Preston could go to work for his family. But Colby could not return to Louisiana where everything went wrong for him.
