Preston glanced at Colby and he nodded. He would watch over Kalie while Preston did his family photos.

As soon as he walked up, his mother took him by the arm. “I like that girl. You two seem quite cozy. Is it serious?”

“Doubtful,” he said. “She’s here to sell her grandparents’ ranch and then she’s going back to New York.”

His mother frowned. “You’re a Nash. Use your charm and convince her to stay.”

If only he could.

After they finished with pictures, he went back to the table and his mother followed him. Luis sat and kept glancing between him and Kalie.

“Kalie, I’m so glad you’re here today. This is the first time Preston and Colby have brought a girl to a family event. I knew your grandparents and your father. They were such lovely people. That ranch has been in the family for generations. It would be a shame to see it sold off to strangers.”

“Mom,” Preston warned, “this is Kalie’s decision.”

“I know, son, but you know how much I hate change,” she said. “And you kids are grown and getting married and well…”

Just then his father announced on the speaker. “Let’s head out to the arena for the rodeo.”

His mother growled. “A damn rodeo at a wedding. I did my best to get rid of that, but your father insisted. Told me if he was paying for the wedding, then he was going to have a rodeo.”

Preston laughed. His father had been holding impromptu rodeos for years. Though he no longer participated, he loved to watch them.

“I better go get changed,” Colby said. “Don’t want to ruin my good clothes.”

“Oh, there goes Michael’s mother. I need to speak to her,” his mother said and hurried away.

Luis stood. “Nice to meet you, Kalie. I’m going to head back to my ranch.”

He’d bought the Rocking B Ranch not far from here with his trust fund and had plans to revitalize the place. Preston hoped the hard work would help him get over what happened to him overseas.

They watched as he walked away.

“Quiet,” Kalie said.

“Yes, the war really changed him. I hope being around people who love him helps him find himself.”

“I can’t imagine what he’s seen,” she said before she whipped around to face him.

Kalie gazed at him, a smile spread across her face. “So you’ve never brought a woman around the family before?”

“No,” he said. “I thought it would be good for you to see how two men can marry the same woman. And I wasn’t about to miss today.”

“It looks like most of the town has turned out for this wedding,” she said.

“Everyone but Jim White’s family. We’re not good enough for him and his bunch. Never have been and that’s quite all right,” he said. “Come on, let’s get a seat on the bleachers. These events usually don’t last long.”

An hour later, Preston and Kalie sat waiting for Colby to ride. He leaned over and whispered in her ear.

“He’s going to be out of commission tonight,” he told her.

She laughed. “If his horse bucks as much as that last one, I can understand why.”

Just then they saw Colby sitting in the chute. “Oh no, he’s next.”

Squeezing his hand, she held on to him tightly. “I don’t want him to get hurt.”

“No one wants to get hurt,” Preston said.
