She nodded. “You probably have a lot of questions about your family. You should come see me sometime soon. I’d like to talk to you.”

Preston grinned. His mother had taken things into her own hands. Granny Jones had probably been told Kalie was going to sell the property. She’d known the Parkers and knew they wanted the land to stay in the family. It was the reason they had left it to their only granddaughter.

“I’d love to hear what you could tell me about my grandparents,” she said. “Yes, if you’re not busy on Wednesday, I’ll come see you.”

The woman laughed. “Honey, I’m at the age that all I do is sit around and wait for death to claim me. You come any time.”

“Thank you,” Kalie said as the woman released her.

Preston shook his head and smiled at his mother. He knew what she was up to. And he was pleased. She had just given her nod of approval to Kalie.

“We’re leaving, Mom,” he said.

She nodded and gave him a wink. “Talk to you soon.”

The three of them hurried across the grounds. It would be dark soon and they couldn’t wait to get back to the house.

CHAPTER11

The sun shone brightly in the blue Texas sky as they rode through the rolling pastures. The cows chewed grass and gazed at them with suspicious eyes. It was still a couple of months before they rounded up the bovine and sold them off, but for now, they were happy eating the fresh meal.

Kalie sat on a horse well, and today, she even had a pair of cowboy boots on. They were showing her the land she had inherited. After the wedding, Preston wanted to do everything they could to convince her to stay.

Colby knew Preston had marriage in the back of his mind, but Colby had not been raised by a happy couple. He’d gotten out of one bad situation and he was terrified of getting into another one.

You would think that he would have heard from his mother while he was in prison, but for all he knew, she was dead. No letters, no calls, nothing. And after that last night when he’d run, he wasn’t about to learn what happened.

She’d been bruised when he left, but not from him – from the asshole she’d married.

Yes, another one.

Glancing at the sky, he pushed the ugly thoughts from his memory. He did his best not to think of them. But when he did, he’d try to evaluate why he felt this desperate need to run.

Now it was Kalie. Damn, the woman was gorgeous, and from the first moment he’d seen her in that grocery store, it had been instant attraction. It was like his body connected with her, and he should have run, but instead he’d pursued her.

And every day, he grew more anxious and trapped.

Only Preston wasn’t running. Preston was in full-pursuit mode and he didn’t want her to leave, but to stay and run the ranch. Preston wanted them to promise each other forever and have two-point-five kids.

Kalie had been the first woman to make him think about promising forever, but in his case, he had no examples of happily forever after. He’d been raised by people he never wanted to see again. And he had the cigarette scars to prove it, among other things.

“Why don’t we stop under that tree up there and have our picnic,” Preston said.

Colby nodded. After the wedding, there was so much on his mind. Watching Preston’s younger sister get married had reminded him of everything he was missing out on. Sure, he could get married, but what if the marriage became like his parents’? What if the monster inside him unleashed and he turned into his father, or stepfather, or even his mother? What if he did to his children what had happened to him?

No, just no. He could never hurt a child. Never. And yet those genes were in his blood.

They pulled their horses to a halt and Preston ground tethered his animal and then helped Kalie down.

“You did very well,” he said. “It may have been years, but you haven’t forgotten how to ride.”

“Thanks,” she said as she reached into her saddlebags and pulled out the blanket.

Swinging his leg over his horse, he watched the sway of her ass and his cock hardened. A groan escaped him and Preston glanced at him.

“Damn, that’s a fine ass,” he said.

So far, they had not taken her in the backside, but the day was fast approaching, and he could hardly wait.
