“Of course you do. Well, I’m glad to see you, dear. The boys were really worried about you. They asked me to come and see if you needed anything else.”

“Oh my gosh. It was just my period. It’s not like I was dying.”

“Ah they were caught unprepared, and now they’re setting things right.”

Well, she was going to make them return everything.

“Where are they, by the way?”

“Oh, they’re away on business. In the city, I believe. Back tomorrow night. And they’ve also asked me to keep you company while they’re away.”

“Oh. Right.”

Well, that suited her just fine. She didn’t need to make bumbling apologies over an already supremely awkward situation. And by the time they returned, it would have been old news already and not worth rehashing. Also her period would be properly over by then anyway.

Except she couldn’t seem to let it go, and she found herself racking her brain trying to remember if she had moaned when they had touched her. If she had clung to them desperately when they made her come.

Did she kiss them back?

Did she imagine the hardness of their cocks against her when they towered over her? Did they get hard? For her?

Her thoughts made her infinitely grumpy, and even Mrs. Decker picked up on them. In the end, she decided she would look at the situation from the night before in a clinical, vital way.

Probably just how they would have reacted and treated one of their female animals if said female animal had been in distress. Right?

Oh my god.

Is that how they were going to look at it? As if she were some female animal under duress, and they were prepared to get dirty to help her.

Oh god. Oh god. Oh god.

And now they had run away on sudden business in the city, where they had to stay when they could have just driven back home because it was literally less than an hour away.

They were avoiding her. She couldn’t believe the conclusion she came to, and she’d be lying if she said it didn’t hurt.

Well, that was their problem. She intended to act like nothing had happened. That approach had worked for her in the past. Like with the Ben Wa ball. Also, what was it with the three cowboys and her doo-dah?

Okay, so maybe they did have business, and she jumped to the wrong conclusion. The absolute truth was her first hypothesis. She needed help. They helped her. It had absolutely nothing to do with… with… It had nothing to do with them liking her. Gosh no. They tolerated her at best because she was their best friends' little sister, and they couldn’t wait for her to leave. She was just a piece of annoying fluff on their chaps.

What they really wanted was Jenna. She had seen how they had looked at her when they’d all had dinner that night at the Holland residence.

They could barely keep their eyes off her. She knew because when she caught them looking at Jenna, they quickly looked away.

Good. Everything was back on track, which meant she was able to enjoy Mrs. Decker’s company. The woman taught her how to knit, and after Lacey explained her real reason for pretending to be their wife, Mrs. Decker decided that Lacey knitting them beanies would automatically put her at the best-wife-ever level.

So she learned how to knit. It was fucking hard, and there were times she wanted to break the knitting needles in half, but she persevered because she wanted to win.

After not seeing them for a whole day, it bothered her that she didn’t know whether she missed seeing their cocky cowboy faces or that she felt she was losing daylight hours to impress them in her attempts to prove to Jenna she could make a perfect wife to the Kennedy brothers after all.

Chapter Eleven

With a belly in knots for no reason, from the moment she woke up in the morning, Lacey carried on with her chores as if the Kennedys were still around to rate her wifely prowess.

But by midnight, when they still hadn’t returned and were a day late altogether from when they should have come back, a sinking feeling took hold of her.

She was just a little pest they had begrudgingly allowed to stay with them for the duration of five days so she could prove to Jenna that she was quite capable of being the cowboys' wife.

They were probably tired of her game. Which meant she needed to pack up and leave with the stinging verdict that she had failed.
