"Open the fucking door right now, Lacey."
She thought about just driving away, but they would turn it into a high-speed chase. What did they want from her when everything they could ever want was sitting in their pretty lounge that she didn’t even know was there?
She opened her door and was instantly grabbed by one of them, tossed over his shoulder, and taken to their pickup.
Someone slipped into her car and drove it.
It only dawned on her then that the only way they could have cordoned her off was if they had taken gravel back roads, which in this weather would have just been heaps of mud.
"You took the back roads? In this weather? Are you fucking crazy?" she yelled. They could have died.
"Not one word out of you until we get home," Joshua growled at her from the driver’s seat.
She sat back, crossed her arms over her damp dress, and stared stonily ahead.
When they reached the ranch, she was carried out and taken upstairs, then ordered out of her wet clothes and into something dry.
"What do you want from me?" she asked.
"What do we want from you? Everything, Lacey. Fucking everything."
"But you have Jenna. She’s agreed to be your wife, and she really is perfect. She saves lives and—"
"You save hundreds of lives every day of your life."
"But she’s Jenna."
"And you’re Lacey, and fuck, we’ve loved you since the day you turned eighteen. Do you know what it's like to be around you and not touch you?"
She shook her head, so confused.
"But you want Jenna. I saw the way you three were looking at her at dinner the other night. You can’t deny that."
"Lacey, we were looking at you, for fucks’ sake, woman."
"What? But why?"
"Because we love you. Because you’re the smartest, sweetest, sexiest, most beautiful woman we've ever seen in all our lives."
“You see a challenge, and you take it. There’s no one like you."
"You put Goliath back in the saddle, so to speak."
"You’re the pretty, meanest girl to us only, that we’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing."
"Well, you deserve it for making every single girl I know want you."
“We tried to stay away from you. Hell, we went on a useless business trip. But after two days, we went and saw your brothers and told them we were going to marry you. We didn’t give them a chance to object.”
"We only wanted you. Always. Forever. Lacey."
"So you want me?"
They spoke to her brothers already? They loved her? All those years, and they kept their hands off her when they loved her?
"And that guy, William Bloom?"
"He’s no one," she smiled.
