Chapter Forty-Four

Juno

Zadie holds up herwine glass. “Here’s to an emergency spa weekend.”

I give her a weak smile. Eli had contacted all of the girls and told them I was really upset. They think I’m struggling with the bombing – which is true, but I’m mostly heartbroken. It doesn’t matter. They showed up. We’re here together, and I’m so thankful Eli made this happen. As much as he was a pain in the ass this summer, I know he loves me and I’m thankful for him. I also recognize that he’s trying to give me space and privacy.

I pick up my wineglass and say, “Thanks for coming.”

Olivia gives me a sympathetic look. “It’s been a lot.”

I nod. That’s true.

Brooklyn stretches her arms over her head and says, “That massage today was life-changing.”

Maggie laughs. “I know. What kind of magic was that?”

We’re on the patio by a fire pit, sipping wine.

“You know I was just thinking this is my first time away from the twins,” Brooklyn says, pouring herself more wine.

“Really?” Zadie says.

Brooklyn nods. “Kip and I go on dates here and there, but I’ve never gone away overnight.”

“It’s my first time away from Ian too, which is why I’m having to pump.” Maggie makes a sad face.

“How is it?” Zadie asks.

Brooklyn laughs. “Amazing. Am I supposed to lie and say I’m miserable?”

Zadie shakes her head. “No. I love my kids too, but I’m also a person who needs some time to myself every once in a while. Don’t feel guilty about it.”

Brooklyn nods. “I’ll try not to.”

Maggie says, “I miss Ian, but he’s younger. I imagine in a year I’ll be ready to spend time away from him.”

Zadie looks over at me, taking a slow sip of her wine.

I tilt my head to the side. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I’m just thinking about your little speech at the White House. I’m proud of you for sticking up for yourself.”

Olivia nods in agreement. “Yeah. It was overdue.”
