She types on her computer as we talk. “Rate your pain for me on a scale of 1 to 10.”

“Seventeen,” I say.

Eli laughs.

She shakes her head. “Well, we can’t have that. Doctor prescribed some pain pills.”

She holds them out toward me. “These will make you feel better.”

I pop them in my mouth and reach for my cup of water. A blinding flash of pain rips through me when I try to sit up. Eli jumps up. “I’ll get it.”

He hands me the water, and I take a big drink.

“Rest as much as you can. I’ll check back with you in a bit. Push the call button if you need me sooner.”










Chapter Sixty

Juno

Irush into the hospital, desperate to see Bode. Eli told me he’s stable now, but he nearly died. Lost half of the blood in his body. I can’t believe how close he was to dying. I wipe tears from my eyes as I rush down the hallway. I can’t get to his room fast enough.

When I make it to his floor, I see Eli’s standing outside the room. He wraps me in a hug.

“How is he?” I ask.

He holds his hands over his mouth and then laughs, “High as a kite.”

My eyes widen. “Really?’

“They gave him some pain killers, and he is feeling really good on them. He’s asleep now though.”

This doesn’t do anything to calm me down. “He’ll be okay though, right?”

Eli nods. “Yeah. He’ll be fine. The staff here has taken great care of him.”

I nearly burst into tears again. “How did this happen?”
