She squeezes my hand. “I had no idea.”

“I know.”

“And Italy?” she asks.

I grin. “I almost immediately regretted going on that trip.”

“I bet you did,” she mutters.

“You were flirting with me, and I knew my willpower was only so strong. I knew I was in trouble when Eli left me with you, and I felt so guilty about it. I felt like I was betraying him.”

“This doesn’t have anything to do with Eli,” she says firmly.

“You’re right,” I say. “It doesn’t. It has to do with us.”

She starts walking back toward the house without saying anything else. I’m not sure how to read the silence.

Once we make it back to the stoop of her house, she turns to face me.

“You look really beautiful tonight,” I say. “You always look beautiful, but I just wanted to tell you.”

“Thanks,” she says.

“Your necklace looks really pretty with that shirt.”

She places her fingers on it and looks down. She’s worn that necklace every time I’ve seen her since I bought it for her. Even when she was with other people.

I keep my voice soft. “Juno, why do you wear that necklace every day?”










Chapter Seventy

Juno

“You look really beautifultonight,” he says once we arrive at my doorstep. “You always look beautiful, but I just wanted to tell you.”

“Thanks,” I say.
