Chapter Six
Juno
“Who eats at an Americansteak house in Rome?” Eli asks as we walk passed a restaurant called Texas Big Steak.
I shrug. “Italians?”
“I definitely didn’t come here to eat American food,” Keene says. He burps and pats his chest.
“Gross, Keene,” I say.
He stretches. “I’m so full. That dinner was amazing.”
We’ve just finished dinner and are walking through the darkened streets of Rome. Lights sparkle off the river. It’s a beautiful evening. The weather is perfect. I’m a little buzzed from the wine at dinner.
“Oh my god,” I say, pointing to a dog. “Look at this.”
I walk closer and the dog thumps its tail on the ground. “It saysdog parkingon the sign on the wall.”
Holding my hand over my mouth, I start to laugh. “Why don’t we have this in the U.S.?”
Keene pets the dog, whose leash is tied to the dog parking sign. “I don’t know. Maybe people in the U.S. would just steal your dog?”
“I feel like some dogs would get worried about being left like this, but he seems really happy to be hanging out tonight. Watching everyone.”
We’re in an alley filled with restaurants.
Keene starts laughing. “Can you imagine what MarryMe would do?”
We all burst out laughing. MarryMe is James and Elizabeth’s golden retriever. She’s never met a stranger and loves nothing more than being the center of attention.
“She’d lose her shit. That’s for sure,” Eli says.
“I bet she’s going to lose her shit when James and Elizabeth leave,” I say.
Once we all stop laughing, Eli inhales loudly through his nose and says, “Bode and I are going out tonight. Keene, can you walk Juno back to the villa?”
For a moment, I think Keene might protest, but instead he says, “Yeah sure.”
I point behind me. “You know there’s literally two Secret Service agents right there.”
Bode shakes his head. “I honestly keep forgetting about them.”
“It’s easy to do,” Eli says.
“I realize that, but...”
I put my hands on my hips. “But you don’t trust me.”
He just gives me a look. “I just want to make sure you’re safe.”
“That’s what the Secret Service agents are for.”
