Juno looks very satisfied. “I know, right? You know what I always say if it’s good enough for the Pope, it’s good enough for me.”

Eli just rolls his eyes and keeps eating. “I’m not sure it’s worth being in a riot.”

She drags her tongue over the top of her cone and says, “But when will you ever have an opportunity to be in a gelato riot again?”

“Hopefully, never.”

“Let me try yours. What flavors did you get?” she asks.

He holds out his cone and says, “What are we doing now?”

“Spanish steps.” She starts walking down the street. Eli doesn’t move and then calls. “Juno, it’s the other way.”

Chapter Ten

Juno

Eli and Keene wantedto look at something in one of the stores we passed, so Bode and I are sitting alone on the Spanish steps.

“It’s beautiful,” I say. “I really want to get a Vespa and ride it around.”

He laughs. “Nothing about that surprises me.”

I put my elbow on my knee and prop my hand under my chin. “Where is your sense of adventure?”

He mirrors me with his hand under his chin and says, “I don’t think your brothers are going to be cool with you riding a Vespa around Rome.”

I roll my eyes. “They can get over it.”

“I wouldn’t do it in Rome. Have you seen how they drive here?” he says.

I laugh. “What about one of the smaller towns or the countryside?”

“I think we can arrange that, and I’ll help convince your brothers it’s a good idea,” he says. He’s staring into my eyes like he’s actually enjoying this conversation.

I sit up straighter. “Bode, are you taking my side?”
