We walk to another painting, a woman on top of a man. “Well, they weren’t prudish.”
He laughs. “No. I’d say not.”
“Do you think sex is one of the things that makes us human like Eli said?” I ask without looking at him.
He considers my question and then answers, “Well, animals do it too, but...”
I wait for him to continue.
"I think pleasure is what separates us.”
I arch my eyebrow. “Pleasure?”
“Sure. I think animals mostly have sex to mate. I guess some animals experience pleasure but not like this.”
He waves his hand around. “We make art about it and sing songs about it, so I suppose in that way, it is one of the things that makes us human. Beauty, sex, love, family...”
“Love?” I say, furrowing my brow. “Is that what this is about?”
He puts his hand on his chin. “I guess it depends on the context. The brothels – no. The fertility stuff – maybe?”
“Looks like some things really don’t change,” I say.
“What do you mean?” he asks.
“Sex can be meaningful or meaningless.”
My words hang in the air, and he just clears his throat.
After a minute, he nods, and we walk to the next painting. A threesome – a very creative one. “Woah.”
I drop my head and look down at the ground, shaking my head.
He chuckles. “Too much for you? I thought you were the adventurous one.”
I feel my face redden. He leans in a little. “This embarrasses you but not the cave the other day? Juno, you are full of surprises.”
I flush even more just as Eli and Keene walk up.
“Why are you bright red?” Keene asks. He looks at the painting and says, “Oh.”
Eli cocks his head and then softly laughs. “Kinky.”
I take a deep breath. “Well, I think that’s enough porn with my brothers for one day.”
As I start to walk toward the door, Keene calls, “Don’t let Maggie hear you call it porn.”
Maggie and Declan join us at the door and Maggie says, “Okay, I’ll admit it. You can call some of that porn.”
Keene holds his palms out her direction and says, “See. I told you.”
“There’s a bit of a blurry line in some of those,” Maggie admits.
Eli responds as we’re leaving, “What did the Supreme Court say about porn? Hard to define, but you know it when you see it.”
Keene laughs. “Well, I definitely saw it.”
Yeah. Me too.
