Page 81 of Be My First

Ihardly slept lastnight. Between the bombshell that I was her first kiss and the second bombshell that she’s trying to lose her virginity to any sketchy guy who will take it, my mind just raced all night. Honestly, her behavior on this trip makes so much more sense now. She has gotten desperate – dangerously so, but it’s understandable. I can’t imagine being in her position in my early twenties. She’s rebelling.

I keep thinking how bad it would have been if she’d been with Justin. She would have gotten hurt. I know that for certain. He was already planning to talk about it – imagine if he’d taken her virginity. It makes me sick to think of how bad her first time would have been if I hadn’t arrived when I did.

Since I’m up early, I make her breakfast – eggs and toast with some fresh fruit. When she walks downstairs, she blinks a few times looking at the food.

I nod toward the table on the loggia. “Have breakfast with me.”

She eyes me suspiciously as she sits down. “Should I brace myself for some sort of dad lecture?”

I laugh. “No. Coffee?”

She nods. I pour her a cup and hand it over.

As soon as she sets it down, she gasps and covers her hand with her mouth. I jump a little. “What?”

“You didn’t tell Eli, did you?” She looks terrified.

“God, no,” I say.

“Or James?” Honestly, that makes my stomach go cold just thinking about it.

I give her a look. “No. I didn’t call the President to tell him his sister is trying to lose her virginity on this trip.”

“Not Will or Declan either?” she continues.

“No, or Keene.”

She laughs. “Keene does not care. He would probably help me find someone.”

I don’t doubt that.

“No, I didn’t tell anyone, and I’m not going to lecture you.”

She gives me another suspicious look before pouring cream into her coffee and giving it a stir. “Okay.”

She takes a sip of her coffee.

“I agree with you,” I say.

She chokes a little. “What?”

“I agree with you. It isn’t fair. None of this is fair, and you shouldn’t be in this position.”

Her eyes widen.

“You should be allowed to make your own decisions and live your life the way you want,” I continue.

Her eyes grow even bigger.

“I’m sorry you haven’t been able to. I understand why you’re frustrated.”

She watches me for a moment and then says, “But?”

I laugh. “But you cannot just lose your virginity to a stranger like that, Juno. Someone like Justin – he would have hurt you. He would have sold his story. He would have humiliated you just to become famous.”

She holds my gaze for a second.

“It’s really not safe, and you don’t want your first time...”
