Laughing, I leaned down and kissed her again. “I want to try a new position tonight.”

Digging her teeth in her lower lip, Saylor nodded.

“What are you making, sweetheart?” I asked Callie.

“Birfday cake!”

“For me?” I asked in pretend surprise.

She nodded.

“Your favorite kind too,” Saylor tossed over her shoulder.

“I told Derrick I’ll be working from home from this point on.”

Saylor turned and faced me with a surprised expression. “What?”

“I don’t need to be in the office. Ashley can handle things while I’m gone. Hell, she could probably do my job better than I can.”

Ashley had quickly moved on from being my receptionist to becoming one of the best market analysts we had on our team at Maxwell and Locke. Of course, she’d learned from the best: my wife. Saylor had taken Ashley under her wing, and the young woman had absorbed everything like a goddamn sponge.

“I told you she was good,” Saylor said with a wink.

I set Callie down. She quickly got bored with the cake and moved on to the coloring book that Saylor had placed on the table. Clearly, she’d known that our daughter would get bored and had a backup plan in place. She was the best mother ever and Callie and I were both lucky she was ours.

Sitting down next to Callie, I picked up a crayon and joined in on the coloring. “I’ve been thinking.”

“Oh yeah? About what?” Saylor asked.

“Stepping down as VP of marketing and taking on the consulting position Ava and Derrick proposed.”

Saylor stopped what she was doing and faced me, leaning against the counter. I could see the excitement in her eyes. The hopefulness.

“It would mean I’d be working from home permanently. Would you guys get sick of me?”

“Never,” she said softly.

“We’d have more time to travel, once the kids are old enough.”

She wiped a tear away. “Mason, are you sure you want to do this?”

I stood and walked over to her, taking her in my arms. Our eyes met and I nodded. “With my inheritance from my grandfather and my share of the profits from my father’s company, I don’t need to work at all, Saylor.”

“You’d go crazy not working.”

Laughing, I agreed with her. “That’s why I’m going to take the position. I’ll no longer be the boss; I’ll be working from home and working less hours. I’ll have time to be here with you and the kids. That’s what I want.”

“I want that too,” she said as she wiped another tear away.

“Then it’s settled. I’ll tell them tomorrow.”

Saylor threw herself into my arms, though her nine-month pregnant belly kept us from being able to embrace completely.

“I love you so much, Mason Quinn.”

Rubbing my nose against hers, I softly replied, “I love you so much more, Saylor Night.”

“Saylor!”
