I uncross my legs and stretch. I’ve been sitting cross-legged for most of the day. But I’m not going to tell him my legs are sore from staying in one place for too long and my butt is numb. “Yeah.” Something seems…off. “Are you doing okay?”

He nods for me but doesn’t move to sit next to me like I would expect him to.

“You know you can tell me anything, right?”

This time it’s me who nods for him. That’s an odd thing to say out of nowhere.

“I’m not going to judge you or anything like that.”

“Okay. Thank you, I guess.”

“So…do you want to tell me something?”

What is going on? “Um, I don’t think so. What?”

“What? What?!” he walks away agitated and upset, throwing his hands in the air and pacing back and forth. “You…I want you to tell me everything. All of it! Starting with the baby.”

Baby? The only baby I know anything about is Brownie. “The baby?” He nods. “Um, what baby?”

His next words take me by such surprise I don’t know what to say, “The one you’re carrying.” What now? “The one that will be my baby.”

He bends down in front of me and takes my face in his hands, “Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant? You could have told me.”

I’m so stunned I can’t even think of what to say. Except of course to deny any of this. “I’m…I’m not…”

“Were you afraid I wouldn’t protect you if I knew you were having someone else’s baby? Because it’s my baby now. You might as well get used to the idea. You’re going to have my baby.”

He’s lost his goddamned mind. “Gareth, I’m not pregnant!” I can’t be.

“You don’t have to lie.” He comes back to me and kneels in front of me. “I called a doctor to make sure it’s going to be alright. They didn’t look at it at the hospital because I didn’t know to tell them about it yet.”

His hand drops to cover my stomach.

“Gareth, I’m not pregnant.” The way he’s acting I almost wish I was. But what put this notion that I’m knocked up in his head?

“God damn it, Birdie, we don’t have time for…,”

I finally just tell him why I can’t possibly be pregnant. “I’m a virgin, Gareth.”

Chapter Twelve

____________

Gareth

I hang the phone up and sit for a moment. Stunned. Birdie, my Birdie, is pregnant. She’s going to have someone else’s baby. So many emotions bubble up inside of me.

My first thought, a gut reaction, is to get rid of the baby daddy…permanently. The next thing I think is about how to woo her, so she’ll want to replace whatever idiot she’s been with, with me. He must be an idiot. Any real man would have already been here, keeping Birdie safe, taking care of her the way she needs to be cared for.

An excitement creeps up too. The thought of her being pregnant and of me being able to take care of her, to make her truly mine, rises inside of me. I can be what she needs. Take care of her, keep her safe, and make sure she never has to worry about anything again. I can do that for her, give that to her.

The next thing that floats through my head are thoughts of pregnant sex, and milky breasts that leak when I have her on top of me. Is that why she has such big boobs for such a tiny person? It would make sense. Maybe that’s why she’s so shy too. It’s new to have sex with all her new curves and her changing body.

Shit! This changes the plans a little. Now there is more urgency to get these men away from Birdie and make sure she stays safe. And of course, I need to find out if the baby is alright. I was with her all through her stay at the hospital and no one knew anything about the baby, so no one took a look. I hunt the name of a doctor I remember my buddy who just had the baby told me about. I can’t remember so in the end I have to call him and get the name and number. It might set some tongues wagging but I really don’t give a shit. The baby’s health is more important than what anyone thinks.

After I make sure the doctor will come, I go to find out if Birdie is alright. I have to tell her not only that I know about the baby but also that things have changed. She’s mine now and so is the baby growing inside of her.

Hurt also wells up inside of me. I’m upset that she didn’t tell me about the baby. She never even hinted that she was pregnant.
