“Yeah.” I’m being moved and then laid on what I assume is a stretcher.

“Okay. Well, she’s got a concussion and no identification on her.” The stretcher starts moving, “So I’m going to need either you or the name and number of next of kin. She’s got to go now!”

I finally take a good look at the person who helped them put me on the stretcher and also knew who I was. Like something plucked right out of my head, I am staring up into the bright blue denim eyes of Gareth Morgan. The last person I was thinking about before the accident happens to be the one staring down at me, holding my hand, and talking to me now.

I reach out and take the hand he was holding me with, using a much firmer grip than he had on me.

“Don’t leave me.”

Chapter Four

____________

Gareth

“She has a concussion so I’m going to need either you or the name and number of an emergency contact. And I’m going to need it now because she has to go. Now.”

“I’ll go with her.” I look over at my buddy who got to the crash first.

I was on my way home when I heard about the crash and came to see if any help was needed. Some of the other cops were working a murder on the other side of town and trying to keep the ‘lookie-loos’ away while the detectives do their job. I've worked with the guys on the case, they’re good and it shouldn’t take them long to wrap the case up but I always try to offer help where I can.

When I found out Birdie was the one who had been in the accident, I had to fight the growing panic that welled up inside me. Panicking wasn’t going to do her any good. So, I went into pro mode and helped the EMTs move her to the stretcher once they got there.

“Go on - get out of here. Go with your girl.”

Maybe that initial reaction gave Jacob the wrong impression but I’m not about to correct him. I crawl in the back of the ambulance with her.

“My purse. I need my purse. My…phone is in it.”

Shit, we’re going to need that. I didn’t see that when I took in the crash scene.

“You had a purse? With you in the car?”

She tries to nod but it ends in a whimper. “Floorboard.”

“Hold up a second will you,” I tell the EMT as I am already out of the back.

“Make it snappy!”

I go to the car’s open passenger side and take a quick look. The passenger door was open when I got to the scene, which I thought was rather odd since no one else was in the car or at the crash. The purse may have gotten lost in the shuffle. I look up and catch Jacob’s attention and tell him to keep his eyes open for it. We’ll need that when we get to the hospital.

When I get back and hop in the ambulance, I take Birdie by the hand again. “You okay, Birdie?”

She doesn’t say anything, and her eyes are closed.

“Hey, stay with me Birdie.” I don’t like that she’s taking longer and longer blinks. Something the EMT on the other side of Birdie is doing catches my attention.

“What are you doing?”

I watch as he brings out the sticky pads they use to hook a person up to monitor them.

“I’m putting the pads on her.” He shows them to me like it’s no big deal.

“I’ll do it.” It’s out of my mouth before I can stop it but I’m not taking it back.

“I bet you will.” He hands them over to me.

I can’t help but shoot the guy a go-to-hell look as he turns away from me to give me time to place the pads. I move her shirt up her body and catch sight of the bra she’s wearing. The thing is pale blue lace…and all but see-through. My hands shake when I try to take the backing off the pads.
