“He’s going to take the baby!” Her voice was thick and groggy, and he wasn’t sure she was aware of him yet.

“The baby is safe.”

She panted three hard breaths, then turned toward his voice. “Ethan?”

“I’m here.”

“Oh my God, it’s true, isn’t it?” She sobbed hard, her eyes leaking and wet behind his hand. “It’s true, it’s true what Belinda said about you? She saw you at the bar.”

He’d forgotten that Belinda walked in on him as he morphed into his alien form before teleporting to the base station. He hadn’t been sure that she’d seen him, but it appeared she had.

“I’m sorry that I couldn’t tell you.”

“Uncover my eyes.”

“You’re not ready to see me just yet.”

Maybe it was him that wasn’t ready. Seeing the real him would change her feelings. The shock of it might stun the affection she felt for him right out of her. He wasn’t ready to watch the light die from her eyes when she looked at him.

“What are you going to do to me? Please don’t experiment with the baby. Please–”

Experiment?

“Kimber, no. No one is harming you or the child. No experiments. This isn’t what your father went through. My hearts beat for you, Kimber. My endtax began growing around my heart the moment I met you. Now they beat as one… the heart that grows from the love of a mate, and the one that keeps me alive. They are joined, just as we are. If something happened to you now, I could no longer live.”

In the corner, Tristan bowed his head and slowly backed out of the room. He snagged Neb by the arm and pulled him along.

A’zal loosened the cuff holding her right wrist and brought her small hand to his chest. She jerked as her palm pressed against the pulse over his heart, but then she relaxed and simply felt. A few days after his hearts had joined, the visible pulse in his chest would recede. He wanted her to feel what she’d done to change him while he had the chance.

Kimber’s breathing slowed. A long pause stretched between them. He didn’t fill it but gave her space to acclimate to what was happening.

“My life force beats stronger because of you,” he said. “Because of us.”

Her fingers curled against his chest. Her lips turned up in a small smile. Finally, she took a steady breath and licked her lips.

“Do you look like the purple man I saw on the screen?”

A’zal cocked his head. “On the screen?”

“There was a man… long black hair, sparkling eyes. He looked sick or something.”

His father? Had curiosity gotten the better of him and he requested to see her?

“Kimber—”

A shudder of near terror rumbled out of her. “I-I want to see you.”

“You will feel differently about me once you do.”

She pulled her hand away from his chest. “Ineedto see you, Ethan. Please.”

Of all the moments he thought to share with a mate one day, this isn’t one of them–revealing himself to a human who would shrink in fear. With his free hand, he opened the cuffs that held her remaining bound wrist, and across her hips. He would never harm her, but he didn’t want her feeling defenseless against him.

Her soft, warm hands closed around the one he used to cover her eyes. She ran her fingers over his arm, searching and feeling. His body was hairless, and the pattern across his chest had a raised texture. Would she enjoy exploring his body?

Kimber pulled at his hand. He resisted at first. But they had to do this sometime. His hand slid away in small increments. She kept her eyes closed. His chest hitched, his fingers curling into his palms.

Blinking several times to clear her vision, she turned her head toward him. Her gaze tracked hesitantly to him, first his hand, then his arm. Her brow furrowed as she continued looking up. Lips trembling, she pulled in raspy, uncontrolled breaths.
