I lean away from Nick. I do not want him breathing on me.

“The wedding will be a private affair, only fifty guests. Paul’s mansion has a beautiful backyard that will be perfect. Everything will be arranged, flowers, music, food you won’t have to lift a finger. All you have to do is walk down the aisle. Of course, Bobby is paying for everything. I have hired a personal stylist for you. She comes highly recommended. She dresses many wealthy women in Chicago. She will assist you in choosing the perfect wedding gown. Since you are going to be Bobby’s wife, you must look the part. She will pick out an appropriate wardrobe. She will help you with hair and make-up.” Nick explains.

I just nod my head. Appropriate wardrobe? Hair? Makeup? Bobby wants a complete make-over. He wants to control me.

“Wonderful. There are some other things we need to discuss – private things – that is why your father and Paul left the room.”

Nick smiles. He looks like a hungry shark.

“What private things? Why isn’t Bobby discussing this with me?”

I am angry.

“Bobby is a very busy man.”

Blah. Blah. Blah. Tired of hearing how busy Bobby is.

“You need to start taking the birth control pills Dr. Gould left for you. Bobby wants to wait a few years before he has children. Dr. Gould is also checking your bloodwork to make sure you are clean.”

“What? Clean? What does that mean?”

“Not having STDs – sexually transmitted diseases. Bobby wants to make sure you are healthy.”

“I am clean! I do not have any STD’s! I am a virgin.”

Nick smiles. Raises his eyebrows. He is enjoying our little talk. Ugh!

“What about Bobby? Is he clean?” I ask Nick.

“I can assure that Bobby is clean and healthy. There are rules we must go over.”

“What rules?”

Huh?

“You will have to have sexual intercourse with Bobby on your wedding night to consummate the marriage. As a mafia wife, you must always dress appropriately. Act appropriately. No social media accounts. Delete any you have now. You must never disrespect Bobby. You must submit to your husband in the bedroom. You must not question him. You must not repeat anything he tells you. You must obey him. You must not draw attention to yourself or embarrass Bobby. You must not cheat on your husband. Divorce is prohibited. If you run away from the marriage, there will be consequences.”

“What about mafia husbands? What are their rules? Can he cheat on me?”

“Mafia husbands are required to protect and provide for their wives and children. Bobby will never lay a hand on you. He will respect you provided you fulfill your duties as his wife. As far as infidelity goes, well, a husband may seek the company of other women, but he is required to be discreet and not to embarrass his wife.”

“Are you serious?”

I am appalled.

“Gwendolyn, I have known Bobby his entire life. He is a complicated man, but he is a fair man. He is a brilliant strategist. A great businessman. He will give you everything you could possibly want if you cooperate with him. Your marriage will go smoothly if you do not give any trouble. If, on the other hand, you do not fulfill your duties, he will not like it. He has a temper. He will never lay a hand on you, but he will make life difficult for you. You must understand when you marry into the mafia, the man owns you – you are his.”

“So, I will be a possession.”

“Yes, but Bobby takes very good care of his possessions.”

I am speechless. I will be Bobby’s possession. Trophy wife. Arm candy. Mafia wife. Loyal. Lonely. Unloved.Breathe.
