“Maria just told me she is lonely.”
“You work too much – you need to spend time with her.”
My father folds his hands in his lap.
“There is nothing I would like better than to spend time with her, but the Russians are a pain in my ass. I want to fucking kill all of them!”
I repeat in detail everything Boris revealed last night. My father sits calmly and listens.
“The Antonovich brothers were behind Gwen’s abduction by the Razors. Villalovos was supposed to kill her to keep her from marrying me. Bogun wanted me to look weak. He did not want me to marry her and gain more power with the Fielding real estate empire. Now he wants me dead. There is probably a hit out on me. The brothers are working with to one of the Bellantoni family. Adan and Gia want Paul Jr. to be capo of the Outfit. Any thoughts, sir?”
“Adan thinks he and Gia can control the Outfit through Paul, Jr. Nick promised Adan that Paul Jr. would be capo someday, to get Gia to marry Paul Jr. She wanted to marry you. Tradition dictates that Paul Jr. should have taken my place as capo, since he is my oldest son. Nick had no right to make promises. He thought I would follow tradition. I did not. Paul Jr. is not a strategist; he is just a violent thug. You are the strategist, Bobby, that is why I chose you to take my place as capo. Paul Jr. is not ready to run the Outfit. Perhaps, the Outfit should have two capos – one for the illegal side of the business – Paul, Jr., and one for the legitimate side of the business, you.”
My father shakes his head. He mutters some curses in Italian. I know he doesn’t want Paul Jr. to run things. Paul is too much of a hot head. He acts without thinking. I just don’t know what I want, besides Gwen, at this point. Maybe having two capos run the Outfit is a viable solution.
“Christov Antonovich was promised he could marry Gwen and take over the Fielding Real Estate Empire once I’m dead. They will force her into a marriage by threatening to kill her father.”
“No. I won’t allow that. Nothing will happen to her, son.”
“Adan also promised the Antonovich brothers the drug territory that I gave to the Razors. I don’t know who I can trust. Someone told the Russians that I was going to marry Gwen even before I knew it! I can’t figure out who. Did you tell Paul Jr. before you told me?”
There is so much I don’t know about the Russian power grab.
“No, Bobby, only you and Ben Fielding knew. Ben Fielding hates the Antonovich brothers. They threatened him over a real estate deal. He would not have said anything to them about his daughter.”
“Are you sure Paul Jr. doesn’t have anything to do with this?”
“No, he would never betray you. He is not that ambitious. Paul Jr. doesn’t have the brains or the balls. The only thing he cares about is pussy. His ambitious cunt wife and her father are behind all of this. She wants to be a capo’s wife. That is the only reason she married him. At Paul Jr.’s and Gia’s wedding I assured Adan that Paul Jr. would replace you as capo one day. He wasn’t too happy. He and Gia want Paul to capo now. She is still angry she did not get to marry you. Maybe if he spent more time with his wife’s pussy we wouldn’t be in this mess!”
My father keeps muttering curses in Italian. I smile.
I add, “besides working with Adan Bellantoni, the other reason behind the Antonovich brothers’ bold moves is they have the DA in their pocket. They videotaped him in a compromising position. Before I make a move against Adan and the Antonovich brothers, we need to talk to the other families in New York first. I would hate to start a war with the New York families.”
My father looks me in the eye. There is a serious look on his face.
“Don’t worry about New York. The Antonovich brothers are finished. Bobby, who else knows about all of this?”
“Only you and the Surgeon. I don’t trust anybody else, not even Nick.”
“The New York families have always been a thorn in the Outfit’s side. The five families have always wanted more control over us. The Outfit has become too independent and powerful under your rule. They don’t like it. Some of the New York families believe that Paul Jr. will make a better capo. They think he will follow tradition, kiss their rings, and be easy to control. You have made the Outfit a lot of money. Kept us off the feds radar.” My father shakes his head. “What a fucking mess! Adan and Gia have betrayed the Outfit! They will be dealt with. Any New York families that have been disloyal to us will also be dealt with.”
“Fuck New York! They owe me. I gave them the pizza business. They are making a fortune!”
I am pissed.
“The other four families in New York won’t like that Adan is working with the Chicago Bratva. Bobby, we need to go to New York.”
“I am worried about Gwen. If anything happens to me, I want her protected. I don’t want her to be forced to marry that Russian bastard.”
I rub my hand over the scruff on my face.
“Nothing is going to happen. We will meet with the capos of the other four families. We will discuss what to do about Adan, Gia, and the Antonovich brothers. I am calling Angel Gaito to arrange a meeting as soon as possible with the other capos of the New York families. I trust him, he will not tell Adan.”
Even though my father is no longer capo of the Chicago Outfit, he is still a very powerful Italian mobster – everybody owes him.
My father pulls his cellphone out of his front pocket.
“My son, you have a decision to make. Once this business is settled, you don’t need to be capo anymore. You need to decide what you want.”
