Christov takes a prescription pill bottle out of his pocket. He shakes out a small white pill. He grabs my mouth and forces the pill onto the back of my tongue. I start to gag. He holds my mouth closed.

“Swallow, Printsessa.”

I swallow the pill. He lets my face go. He caresses my cheek and looks into my eyes.

“Good girl. Sleep now.”

Christov stands up. He is watching me.

I wish he would just kill me. I hate him. I hate the Russians. I hate Bobby. I hate my father for giving me to Bobby. I hope I never see Bobby again. He tossed me aside like garbage. I wanted him to love me. I am ashamed I fell for his lies, his touch, his kisses. I am just a pawn in a sick game between the Russians and the Chicago mafia.

“Before I go, Printsessa, I want you to hear what kind of man your husband really is.”

Christov presses the screen on a cellphone. He plays an audio file. I hear a female voice.Vanessa? She is talking to Bobby. I hear rustling. A zipper unzips. Silence. Panting. Moaning. Flesh slapping flesh. They are having sex!

Shock.

Betrayal.

I scream, “oh my God – turn it off!”

“You see Printsessa. He never cared for you. He was fucking Vanessa behind your back.”

I bury my head in the filthy mattress. I want to disappear. I feel groggy. The pill is working. I close my eyes.

Chapter Fourteen

“The wise warrior avoids the battle.”

Bobby

Iclimb in the back seat of my SUV after I hang up on Christov Antonovich.

Fuck the Russians! I know. I know. I lied. I am taking a risk. Calling their bluff. I am gambling they will not kill Gwen.

The Antonovich brothers want me dead, not my wife.

Since Christov wants to marry Gwen after they kill me, I am counting on him to keep her alive. Gwen and the Fielding real estate empire is just as desirable to the Antonovich brothers as it is to me.

I try not to think about Gwen. She is strong. Smart. The nightmare she experienced with the Razors will help her deal with the Russians. But…she heard everything I just told Christov Antonovich. Fuck. When this is over, she may never forgive me. Hell, I wouldn’t blame her. I just threw her to the wolves.

I tell my driver to take me to my penthouse.

How did Christov Antonovich get inside my home to abduct my wife?I left her with two trusted bodyguards outside the front door. Even if the Russians managed to kill them, the door to the penthouse is reinforced steel with a code to get in. No way could anyone break it down. The Russians had to know the code to get inside.

I text Gino and Frankie, riding in the sedan behind the SUV, and tell them to call a half a dozen of my most trusted soldiers and have them meet us at the penthouse.

The Antonovich brothers have taken what is mine, Gwen. This is going to be a blood bath. They will die. My underbosses will back me. They hate the Russians Bratva.

I enter my building with eight Outfit soldiers. The doorman is lying on the floor at his station. Gino runs over to him and checks his neck for a pulse.

“Boss, he is alive. Looks like he was drugged – needle mark in his neck.”

We ride in the elevator to the penthouse. When the elevator doors open, I see Gwen’s bodyguards. Dead. They are laying on the floor in front of the penthouse’s open front door. Blood is everywhere. Their throats have been cut. No signs of struggle or torture. Gwen’s bodyguards did not open the door.Who opened the door?Someone who knows the code. My gut tells me someone besides Gia and Adan Bellantoni is working with the Russians.Who? Is it Paul, Jr.? Did he betray me to become capo?I don’t trust anybody.

I tell my men to call the cleaners. After this is over, I will contact the dead bodyguards’ families.
