“Hey unicorn,” he breathed tenderly – and looked away to meet her father’s eyes as she watched their exchange. “Sir, I would be honored to take her as my wife, and will always care for her.”

“I give her to you… son.”

“Thank you, sir.”

Michael extended his arm to Ruby – and she took it, but only after her father kissed her on the cheek, whispering ‘Be happy with him’in a choked voice that nearly broke her.

“I will, Daddy… I promise,” she whispered emotionally, before looking at Michael again. “I can’t believe all of this.”

“I had to graduate first… and technically that happened today,” he chuckled. “Do you think you can put up with a soldier who got his orders finally?”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, I mean… he eats a lot, can be really obnoxious at times, and is always gawking at some girl with wild colored hair. I have it on good authority that he also believes that she’s got the best-looking set of…”

“Michael!” Ruby blurted out, quickly putting a hand over his mouth as she blushed, glancing back at their parents, as everyone in the room laughed.

“I was going to say ‘eyes’…” he smiled, pulling her hand away. “Sheesh, what were you thinking, huh?”

“Where did you get orders to?”

“I thought we were here to get married?”

“We are…”

“Does it matter then?”

“No, just so long as you are safe, and I can be close to you.”

“So, then you’ll marry me?”

“I’m here, aren’t I?”

“I was kinda hoping for a ‘Yes, Michael, I can’t wait to be your wife’statement…” he mocked dramatically – causing Ruby to stomp her foot in frustration as she glared at him.

“You’re doing this on purpose.”

“Absolutely.”

“Marriage first?”

“Always,” he smiled. “Our marriagealwayscomes first to me.”

… And she melted.

It didn’t matter where they went, so long as she was free to love this incredible guy that took her by surprise, unexpectedly becoming the best person she’d ever met in her life.

“I think we are finally ready to begin,” Michael said to the chaplain, not looking away from her eyes as she gazed at him.

They held hands as they exchanged their vows there in the silence of the chapel, and she couldn’t help but smile as she recognized the rings that he pulled out of his pocket. They were almost exactly the same as what they’d tried on months ago together.

“Boston cream,” he murmured, smiling at her, as he slid the wedding band over her knuckle.

“You can have the last bite this time,” she replied softly, causing him to laugh as she moved to put his band on his ring finger.

“Nahhh,” he teased softly, stepping forward to her and whispering intimately, “That last bite is so much sweeter on your lips.”

“I love you,” she smiled, turning her face upwards to kiss him as the chaplain pronounced them man and wife.
