No!

Stun. Slice. Sever.

Stun. Silence. Sever! Stun. Silence. Sever.

My hands shook as he neared. Closer. Closer.

Oh, God, I couldn’t do it. I didn’t trust myself enough.

Shadows moved behind the stranger, and in the next breath, a flash of steel marked the path of a blade, and I shot up in bed, just as Vaszhago grabbed the intruder from behind, holding his dagger at the man’s throat. How the demon even got into my room without my knowing was a mystery I’d ponder later. Right then, I was just relieved as hell to see him.

“I am a friend! I am a friend!” the man shouted, holding his hands into the air. “I don’t come to harm. I know Jericho Van Croix.”

“Well, unfortunately for you, he isn’t here.” The dark threat in Vaszhago’s voice was as unsettling as the orange glow of his eyes. “But I’m sure that’s why you snuck inside, isn’t it?”

“I only chose the window because of the dogs.”

“And what luck that you chose that of the lady of the house.”

“Hers was the only one open.”

“You say you’re a friend of Jericho’s,” I interrupted, the curiosity burning inside of me as they argued back and forth. “Who are you?”

“I am Soreth. I knew him as a boy.”

A boy? Then, perhaps Lustina had met him before, though his voice and presence didn’t summon a single memory right then.

“You are an angel.” Vaszhago spat the word as if it burned in his mouth. “I can smell your kind from a mile away.”

In my sleep-deprived mental fog, I shook my head. “An angel?”

“I am, yes. But as I said, I do not wish any harm.”

An angel! Oh, God. I scooted back onto the bed, the urgency to run from the room pulling my attention toward the door. Had he come for me in Jericho’s absence?

Perhaps Camael was wrong in her vision about not sensing the wrath of Heaven in my future. Maybe that whole conversation had really just been a figment of my brain trying to make me feel better. Except, that it didn’t really make me feel better.

Swallowing past the sudden dryness in my throat, I dared myself to ask, “Is it me you’re after? Are the angels coming for me?”

“I am alone.”

“And just what brings you for a visit so late at night,Soreth? Do all angels sneak into the rooms of human females, or is it just the exceptionally horny ones?” The way Vaszhago held the angel to the blade, taunting him, I couldn’t help but wonder how close he was to sliding that metal across the intruder’s throat.

Angel’sthroat, rather.

“I’ve come only to deliver a message.”

“From whom?” Vaszhago asked.

“Forgive me, but that is none of your business.”

“My blade says it is.” The demon lifted the weapon higher, an ominous glint of the metal flickering in the dim light as he held it propped at the crook of the angel’s neck. “In fact, it’s getting thirsty for blood.”

“Vaszhago,” I pleaded. “It might be important.” I turned my attention back to the angel. “I can pass the message onto him. We’re … kind of dating.”

Soreth shook his head as much as the sharp steel would allow. “I must speak with him directly.”

“Well, then, congratulations. You just won an overnight stay in the dungeon.” With a rough kick to the back of the intruder’s legs, Vaszhago urged him toward the door.
