I breathed a small sigh of relief. “Well, you’ve just missed him, as well. With all due respect, I don’t have time to inquire anything more. I have to leave. Now.”

“I’m coming with you.”

Vaszhago and I exchanged a quick look, and I turned back toward Adimus again.

Perhaps sensing our confusion, Adimus let out a sigh. “Soreth has gone astray. He’s gotten himself involved in the A’ryakai, and I’m sure I don’t need to tell you the danger in that.” The angel had always been a bit arrogant, but the A’ryakai took their prejudices to the extreme. “If he is anywhere near Farryn at the moment, that could be very bad.”

“Why?”

Brows lowered, he rubbed a hand over his jaw, looking contemplative for a moment. “It puts me at great risk to tell you this, but perhaps it will make you less suspicious of me.”

Something told me I already knew what he was about to tell me, something I’d suspected earlier, but dismissed.

“Farryn is the Met’Lazan.”

A cold chill spiraled down the back of my neck as I stared back at him. Of course, it was Farryn. Because the universe loved to fuck with me. And while I’d suspected Farryn for a brief moment, I’d just as quickly thought it too fucking convenient.

“Those born to the Blood Moon Curse are descendants of the Met’Lazan. It is why they’re made to perish and be reborn. So that the knowledge is passed.”

I scratched the back of my neck where that damn tickling sensation persisted and shook my head. “That’s impossible,” I said, but I knew better. It made sense, and I had been too wound up to see what was right in front of me the whole time. “She’sthehuman. The one who can access the vitaeilem in Etheriusz?”

“Yes.”

Laughter burst forth from my chest on a cough. “All this time, I have searched every bit of information possible so that I could protect her, and … it was her?”

It made sense, then, why Soreth had sought me out for asylum. Something had felt off about it from the beginning, which was why I’d kept him locked in a cell.

“Every morsel of information you might’ve been able to scrounge would’ve left you at a dead end. The universe goes through great lengths to keep the identity a mystery, it’s known only to the highest order of angels. The ancient gods chose a human. A neutral and fragile force to carry the power of the heavens.”

“Then, how did Soreth become privy?”

With an unenthused expression, Adimus growled. “By stealing files he was forbidden to touch, on behalf of the A’ryakai.”

Urgency goaded my muscles, but as I twisted back toward the stables, Adimus lurched toward me.

“Where are you going?”

“To retrieve my horse. I don’t have time for any more lessons in history. My woman is in danger.”

“Ah, yes. I forgot. You sacrificed your wings and power.”

“To save her life. You certainly weren’t doing me any favors. And she damned her soul to bring me back.”

Huffing, he lowered his gaze. “I’ve only recently become privy to what she is.”

“And was she not worth the effort when she was nothing more than a human?” My muscles clenched as I fought the urge to throw a fist in his face right then. “You, and the good of the whole.”

“Still, when this is over, knowing what she is, you will keep your distance from her, as she is now protected by the heavens. As for damning her soul, The Infernal cannot lay claim to the Met’Lazan.”

“If she was truly protected, you wouldn’t be here now. You cannot set foot inside of Infernium. That is why you sought me out. Why didn’t you come for her sooner? Why are you only trying to save her now?”

“In order to protect her fully, she would have to be taken to the Heavenly Isles. Unfortunately, she was pregnant with a half demon. As you are well aware, half demon breeds are forbidden there. Your love for her has essentially placed all five realms in peril.”

“So, my father cannot claim her soul? He does not own it?”

“No. He can, however, keep her imprisoned, so I suggest we get to Infernium posthaste.”

“I’d love to. Unfortunately, I have to travel like humans.”
