Elijah. Here…

A living nightmare.

“Elijah you can’t justmovehere,” I blurted.

“Oh but I can,” he smiled. “And I did.”

“But… butwhy?”

“To be near you, of course.”

I brought my hands to my face, or maybe I sunk my face into my hands. I was shaking so badly, I didn’t know which.

“Elijah, Ileftyou,” I cried in exasperation.

“More like slipped out in the dead of night,” he said smugly.

“Yes!” I screamed. “To avoidthis!”

“I can’t say I wasn’t impressed,” he acknowledged. “Trading your car in, so I didn’t know what to look for. Chopping up your credit cards…”

“Elijah…”

“But when you hired an Uber to drive your phonethree hoursto the south, while you drove away in the opposite direction?” He laughed manically. “Genius, Angel! Total fucking genius.”

Memories clawed their way to the surface, and not very good ones. Elijah had worked hard to make leaving him nearly impossible. He was disgustingly rich. He had unlimited resources. He’d always gotten whatever he wanted, and what he wanted most at the time was me.

But then I didn’t want him, and that was a problem. Even the seemingly simple act of breaking up had taken a monumental effort on my end.

“You knew I’d come back here,” I challenged. “I talked about it enough.”

“Yes. You did.”

“So if you knew the whole time…” I reasoned. “If you left me alone to start a new life, why would you—”

“Because I wanted to give you time to think,” he interrupted. “To reason. To fully realize what you were giving up.”

My lip curled in a snarl. His narcissism was so thick it was outright abrasive.

“I wanted to give you space, Jenna. I wanted you to realize just how much you were giving up before I gave it back to you.”

My whole body went numb, and this time not with cold. It shivered involuntarily.

“Give itbackto me?” I repeated in disbelief.

“Yes.”

The wind kicked up again, blowing a lock of Elijah’s hair across his face. He swept it away in annoyance, as he always did. A clue that the smallest of things still frustrated him.

“Elijah, I wouldn’t get back together with you if you were the last—”

“Is it because of your new boyfriend?”

He nodded back at the house, leaving me wondering which boyfriend he was referring to. His expression was bitter.

“Because he’s nothing, Jenna. That guy can never give you the type of life that I can.”

“You mean the type of life your daddy’s money can buy?” I shot back scathingly.
