“About the restaurant?” She nodded solemnly. “I’m sorry, baby. Whatever it is this time around, we’ll get it fix—”

“Wait,” I cut in. “Hold on.”

Tiredly, the two of them turned to look at me.

“The man was on HamburgerHill?”

Jenna nodded.

“You sure about that?”

“Absolutely,” Jenna declared. “One of the only times I met him I saw photos in his office. There were all kinds of magazine articles. Newspaper clippings. I remember asking him about it. It was the one thing he loved talking about, without feeling rushed.”

Hamburger Hill.

“Holy shit…” I breathed.

Tyler’s eyes narrowed. He knew me well enough to realize something was up. “Holy shit what?”

I locked eyes with Jenna. “You said you met this guy while you were dating Elijah, right?”

“Sebastian Strong?” She nodded.

My mind raced, as an idea formed. It wasn’t the greatest, most solid idea in the world. But it was better than what we had so far.

“Sorry,” I told Tyler, handing him the broom. “We’ll talk later.”

He looked a little bewildered as I grabbed Jenna’s hand and led her through the restaurant’s exit, out into the cold evening winds.

“And you’re absolutelysurethis is a good idea?” I asked again.

Luca nodded and slid the phone even further across my side of the table. I stared down at it apprehensively.

“Because once we cross this line…”

“Do it,” he insisted. “Get him up here.”

My stomach rolled, and not just because we hadn’t eaten. We’d spent half the evening with me driving us around town, and Luca on the phone making calls. At first I hadn’t the slightest clue what he was trying to plan, but toward the end of the evening things began coalescing.

And shit,nowI was scared.

“You said you could do it, right?” he urged. “That the two of you had a relationship?”

“Not a relationship,” I tried to explain. “More of a respectful rapport with one another, but yes, I definitely—”

Our food arrived, interrupting our conversation. The smiling waitress pushed forward exactly what we’d both wanted, which was breakfast for dinner. Eggs, bacon, hash browns. Pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries on top.

“Let’s eat first,” I suggested.

But Luca shook his head. “I did my part already. Those wheels are already in motion.”

“So?”

“So make the call first,” he reiterated, grabbing a pair of sugar packets. He held them from the top and flicked them with his finger. “It’s getting late.”
