“What?” I demanded.

“Overacting much?”

“Bite me,” I said lightly. “I totally sold it. If anyone was eavesdropping, they’ll never question it.”

“No one in their right fucking mind would believe that wasn’t an act,” he said.

The waitress rushed toward our table, worry on her face. “Oh my God, honey, what happened? Are you okay?”

I blinked up at her, crocodile tears filling my eyes. “My best friend just called. My house burned down. We have to go.”

“Oh, sugar, I’m so sorry. Your check is on the house,” she said.

“Oh, no, I couldn’t do that,” I blubbered, reaching for a napkin.

“I will.” I nodded. “Thank you.”

When she left and Viper and I were alone again, I shot him atold you sosmile. “What were you saying?”

“Un-fucking-believable,” he muttered.

“Leave her a big tip,” I said. “She’s really sweet.”

He raised a brow.

“Weareon a first date. Come on, Viper. Sell it.”

“Hey,” I greeted.

She pulled her eyes away from the smoldering rubble. Carla wrapped an arm around me. “I’m so sorry.”

“Thank you,” I murmured, still not believing that the place I’d called home for the last two years was actually gone.

Andwhyit was gone.

I swallowed, suddenly overcome with emotion that wasn’t at all manufactured. The tears in my eyes were real.

I was homeless. Without roots. Alone.

Carla held me while my shoulders shook, but I quickly got my emotions under control.

That was the thing about the trailer park. People kept to themselves most of the time, but they had no problem gossiping when drama was right in front of them.

The air was stifling and smoke from the fire entered my nose. Every time I breathed in I was reminded of what was burning in the ashes…
