“All of them?” I pressed.

“All of them.”

“This one I get,” I said, stroking his tattoo of the club logo. “It’s pretty self-explanatory. But what does this one mean?”

I was asking about his prison tattoo, and I wanted to know if he’d tell me the truth.

“It’s a reminder of how to live my life,” he said.

“What does that mean? How do you live your life?”

“Brotherhood. Family. Protect the innocent.”

I nibbled my lip, still debating if I wanted to open up this can of worms. And even though Viper and I didn’t have a future, I still wanted to know whose bed I was sleeping in.

“I know you were in prison,” I said quietly.

His expression didn’t change. “Who told you?”

“No one. Well, the Old Ladies alluded to you having a past, and that it was dark. But it wasn’t them. I saw your tattoo and I asked Roman about it—to see if he recognized it.”

“Why did you ask Roman? Why didn’t you ask me?”

I suddenly realized the danger in asking about something so particular—I hadn’t thought through what would happen if he connected the dots as to why I was so curious about it.

“Would you have told me?” I asked, panic rising in my belly.

“Not the point of the question, is it?” He removed his hands from beneath his head and sat up, catching me in his arms so I couldn’t escape. “What aren’tyoutelling me, Sutton?”

My eyes widened. “What? What do you mean?”

“Do you think I’m stupid? Or do you think I’ll let the matter drop? This has something to do with the phone calls, doesn’t it? Who called you the other morning? It has something to do with all of this, doesn’t it?”

I swallowed but didn’t reply.

“I think it’s time we had some real honesty between us.”

“You know what? Never mind. I don’t need to know why you were in prison. None of my business.”

“You could be sleeping with a convicted murderer.”

“Am I?” I asked.

“Would it change what we’re doing if I said yes?”

“I know you’re involved in…stuff. Your club wouldn’t have been able to help me without being on the other side of the law. Would it stop me from sleeping with you? I don’t know. I guess I’d have to know why you were in prison.”

We stared at each other, and then he said, “Is this one of those leap-of-faith moments? Where I tell you the truth and then you finally tell me what’s going on with you?”

“This goes beyond just sleeping together,” I said. “This is like…actually getting to deeply know each other.”

“Why do you think I don’t do shit like this?” he demanded. “I’m not the guy to promise women anything, and if I don’t promise, then I don’t have to explain myself or worry about their fucking feelings.”

“You worry about my feelings?”

“I’m starting to, which bugs the fuck out of me.”

“I knew there was a soft underbelly to your beastly exterior.”
