“The kid thing. If I remember correctly, you didn’t seem terrified by the idea.”
“I wasn’t.”
“So, kids…”
“What about them?”
“Do you like them?” I blurted out.
“Haven’t spent that much time around them, to be honest.”
“Yeah, okay, but doyouwant kids?”
He paused before replying, “Haven’t thought much about it.”
“Oh.” I nibbled my lip.
“You?”
I shook my head. “I don’t know how I feel about them.”
“You don’t have to know how you feel about any of this right now. Like I said, you’re young.”
“You’re not,” I blurted out.
He raised his brows. “Did you just fucking call me old?”
“No,” I immediately backtracked. “I just meant, old for being a parent.”
“Slash is older than me, and he’s about to be a father.”
“Valid. I just, ah fuck. Never mind.”
“Not never mind. Spit it out.”
“I don’t want to talk about the future because…do we even have a future? There’s a cartel war coming and who the fuck knows what life will look like when it’s over. Besides, I’m not even sure I want to stay in Waco, and we can’t do this indefinitely and sleeping together can have consequences and—”
Viper gently placed his hand over my mouth to get me to stop talking. “My turn.”
“But—”
He shook his head. “My turn. Will you be good and keep quiet?”
I glared at him, but reluctantly nodded.
Viper dropped his hand. “You’re worried about the future.”
“No, I’m simply—”
“My turn,” he interrupted.
I sighed and nodded again.
He waited to see if I was really going to keep my mouth shut. When he was satisfied, he said, “You’re worried about the future. You know what worrying does most of the time? It ruins the present. I was in prison for five years, and do you know how I got through it? One step at a time. One day at a time. I lived in the moment. And then one day I was free. Live for the present with me, Sutton. The future will sort itself out.”

Three days later,I was smiling from ear to ear and nothing could bring me down. Not cheesy eighties music playing on the jukebox, and not the kid who left me change after I made him a fancy drink he claimed was for his girlfriend.
