He looked momentarily shocked that she’d touched him of her own volition.

Everyone headed inside while Viper and I brought up the rear. The guys had already popped open bottles of beer and liquor. Mia lowered herself onto the couch. Colt moved around the kitchen, filling a cup with bourbon before bringing it to his wife.

She took a sip and breathed deeply. “Bless you.” Mia then handed me the cup.

Viper took a seat in one of the recliners and patted his leg. I settled on his lap, curling into him. His hand wormed its way underneath my tank and rested on my lower back. His palm was warm and comforting.

“What happens now?” I asked.

“We wait for Boxer and Doc,” Colt said. “Then we have church.”

“I’ll call the rest of the boys,” Smoke offered.

Colt nodded. “Get the women and children here, too. And nobody drink too much. It’s gonna be a long night.”

“Colt, you’re in my light,”Doc said.

Boxer slapped Colt on the shoulder and said, “Come on. Mia’s in good hands. Let Doc work without hovering.”

Colt looked at his wife.

“Go,” Mia urged. “I’m fine. Sutton’ll keep me company. Won’t you, Sutton?”

“Yep.” I hiccoughed. “I’m not drunk, I swear.”

“Doc, don’t let them drink anymore,” Colt commanded.

“I won’t,” Doc said, head bent as she extracted a piece of glass from deep within Mia’s arm and dumped it into a tin bowl. “Remember what you promised me?”

“I remember,” Colt said. He glanced at Boxer. “Porch?”

“Porch,” Boxer agreed.

Viper had fallen silent the moment we’d gotten to the clubhouse, but we were quickly learning how to speak without words. He looked at me, cupped my face and raised my chin up so I could meet his gaze.

I grasped his wrist and gave it a squeeze before releasing him.

He let go of my chin and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear before following Colt and Boxer, closing the office door behind him.

“What did Colt promise you?” I asked Doc.

“I said I didn’t want to do any more surgeries at the clubhouse without a proper space and equipment. He promised me a surgery room with the expansion of the clubhouse. Disguised as a daycare for sick kids, of course.”

“Anymoresurgeries?” I queried. “So there have been a lot then?”

“Surgeries is misleading. But I have patched up a few of the guys,” Doc said. She looked at Mia. “I didn’t think Colt was going to leave you. Even to let me work.”

“I needed a reprieve,” Mia admitted. “The truck ride back here was intense.”

“I bet,” Doc murmured.

“He’s in that mood of his,” Mia said.

“Ah.” Doc nodded. “Got it.”

“Mood? What mood?” I asked.
