“They put a hit out on my woman,” Colt snapped. “I’ll kill ’em all.”

“You go charging into cartel territory without a plan and you’re gonna make Mia a widow.” Boxer placed his hand on Colt’s shoulder. “You guys have kids. Come on, man. Let’s get you some coffee. Take a breather.”

Joni, Doc, and Darcy were in the kitchen, watching everything unfold. Joni went to the cabinet and pulled out a mug. She quickly filled it with coffee and handed it to Boxer.

“Thanks,” he said.

She nodded, looking somber.

Boxer led the way, followed by Colt and Gray. Zip brought up the rear. Viper glanced at me, grasped the back of my neck and quickly brushed his mouth against mine before following his brothers out of the clubhouse.

“He woke you guys,” Joni said.

“It’s okay.” I nodded and then looked at Doc. “Did Colt sleep at all last night?”

Doc shook her head. “As far as I know, he holed up in the shed where they have church and began drinking.”

“And Mia?” I asked.

“Still asleep,” Doc said. “I gave her something to help.”

“Let me get you a cup of coffee,” Darcy offered.

“Thanks,” I murmured.

Darcy poured me a cup and I added cream and sugar from the containers on the counter.

“You guys heard, then? About South Paw?” I asked, raising the mug to my lips and looking at Joni and then Darcy.

“Tragedy.” Darcy sipped her coffee.

“Funeral’s tomorrow,” Joni said. “I’ve got the details planned. And Brooklyn is taking care of the food.”

I lifted the coffee to my mouth. “What happens after?”

“After?” Darcy asked. “After the funeral, you mean? We’ll come back here, have a wake of sorts.”

I shook my head. “I mean with the cartel. Where do we go from here?”

“Not sure yet,” Joni said slowly. “The guys will have church, they’ll talk, they’ll vote and we’ll take it one day at a time.”

“It’s escalated though, right?” I asked. “I mean, they put a hit out on Mia. The guys won’t just stand for that, will they?”

“No, they won’t,” Mia said as she came into the kitchen. Her forearm was bandaged, and she had bags under her eyes. Her brown hair was disheveled.

Without a word, Darcy poured her a cup of coffee.

“Has anyone seen my husband?” Mia asked.

“Your husband is currently drunk as a skunk. Zip is trying to talk him out of attacking the cartel,” Joni said.

“Oh.” Mia looked at me. “You doin’ okay?”

“Me?” I asked. “Yeah. But I’m not the one who’s injured.”

“I’ve had worse.” She shrugged. Mia’s shoulder’s sagged and she took Darcy’s offered hand. “I’m trying really hard not to cry, but I might fail.”

“Cry,” Doc said. “Let it all out.”
