I nodded. “Like, do we get a party or something? Like, congrats you guys are shackled to each other now.”

“There’s usually a celebration. I guess normal people would call it an engagement party.”

“That sounds fun.”

“Might have to be put on hold though. All things considered.”

I sighed. “Yeah. I’d feel like an utter shit celebrating on the heels of a wake.”

The rumble of motorcycles preceded the arrival of several bikers. It was a caravan of sorts, and SUVs were behind them. Prospects at the gates let them in and they parked in the gravel lot.

“Cue pandemonium,” I said as everyone began making their way toward the porch.

Slash and Brooklyn were holding hands, and he helped her up the stairs. “Watch your footing,” he said.

“Thanks.” She grasped the handrail.

“Hey, guys,” I said quietly.

Brooklyn looked at me. “Hi.” She dropped Slash’s hand and then moved toward me.

I instinctively took a step back.

She frowned. “What are you doing?”

“Moving away in case you were going to slug me.”

“Slug you? Why would I slug you?” she asked in confusion.

Slash interjected, “Because she was the one who told me you were at the bakery when you promised you were at home resting.”

“Yeah, that,” I said with a nod.

Brooklyn shook her head. “I was going to give you a hug.”

“Why?”

She raised her brows. “Because of what you went through last night.”

“Oh, uh—”

Brooklyn embraced me and whispered in my ear, “Are you doing okay?”

“I’m fine,” I said, even though tears pricked my eyes.

She pulled back to look at me. “Not sure I believe you.”

“I’m okay,” I insisted. “But all the hugging has me freaked out.”

Brooklyn smiled. “Emotion averse?”

“Something like that.”

Slash and Viper had moved away from us, as if to give us a measure of privacy.

I pitched my voice lower when I said, “I didn’t mean to get you into trouble.”

“You didn’t,” she assured me. “Slash is overprotective, and I love him for it.” She looked at her husband, her face softening.
