“Go ahead,” I said.

She plopped down next to me. “I saw it all across your face.”

“What?”

“The freak-out you just had the moment you realized what you’ve actually gotten yourself into.” She smiled softly and bumped her knee against mine.

“I was happy for like five minutes,” I said quietly. “Viper asked me to be his Old Lady—and I thought I knew what that really meant. But hearing Mia talk about her son knowing what went down…” I shook my head.

“You thought it was going to be all sunshine and roses?”

“No. Of course not. But you can kind of compartmentalize things that haven’t happened yet, you know?”

“You must think we’re all crazy to marry bikers and have babies with them.”

“I don’t think you’re crazy. That would make me crazy, but…fuck, it’s just a lot. And it happened fast.”

“Life’s a rollercoaster,” she said. “My suggestion is to hold on for dear life and scream your fright out.”

“What, like right now?” I asked in amusement.

“No. You scream like a banshee and all the men will come running.”

“I’ll just tell them I saw a giant cockroach.”

She chuckled. “Does this change things for you? Mia put you on the group text, you know. She didn’t do that lightly.”

“No, it doesn’t change things for me,” I said in realization. “We live by different rules, don’t we?”

“We, huh?”

“Yeah, we. I’m one of you now. And I’m no Victorian maiden. I won’t faint or need smelling salts, but Mia being honest with her son really threw me. I didn’t know that was allowed.”

“I think we’re all kind of figuring it out as we go. Sailor and Waverly know what’s going on with the club. Why do you think Savage and Acid are training them in self-defense?”

“Oh. I see.”

She nodded. “Maybe you were thrown because Silas is only thirteen.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

“He’s an old thirteen, though. Seen a lot. Lived a lot in his short life. He can handle it. It’s why they don’t treat him with kid gloves.”

Darcy opened the front door. “Church is over. Colt wants everyone in the backyard for a meeting.”

Chapter37

We gathered out back.Viper was sitting on a log in front of the fire pit. I immediately went to him and sat next to him. He scooted over to give me more room, but I didn’t need much.

“The kids?” Colt asked.

“Waverly and Sailor are keeping them occupied in the theatre room,” Mia assured him.

The club president stood in front of the group, looking no worse for wear despite his night of drinking.

Zip was posed next to Colt in a silent show of support.

“We all know why we’re here,” Colt began. “The funeral for South Paw is tomorrow. We’ll have a wake after that, and then we’re going into immediate lockdown. Everyone is staying at the clubhouse. No work, no play.”
