Viper’s heavy boots tromped across the wood floor and suddenly, I felt his large hand on my shoulder. Colt’s gaze darted away from me to Viper. A moment later, his eyes returned to me.

Something about Viper’s touch calmed me. I wasn’t alone.

“Yeah, human trafficking,” Colt finally said. “It’s a huge fucking problem in Waco.”

“How do you know all this?” I demanded. “Unless…”

Colt’s voice dropped low. “Unless?”

“Unless you’re involved…somehow?”

“The club’s involved,” Colt admitted. “We’re involved in stopping it. We’re currently at war with the cartel. They don’t want to stop the skin trade, but we’re determined to end it. At least in Waco.”

“Oh. Oh, I see.” I nodded.

“I don’t think you do,” Colt said. “You were going to become another statistic. If you’d lost that fight, he would’ve most definitely raped you. And then he would’ve taken you across the border where you’d have been sold and never heard from again.”

Nausea swam in my belly.

“You’re in this shit now, darlin’,” Colt said, his tone grim. “You’re in it now, whether you want to be or not.”

“I prefer not,” I said bleakly.

“Don’t really have a choice,” the president of the club said.

Viper squeezed my shoulder and then let go.

“We just disappeared a body for you. We cleaned up an awfully big mess. You’re staying with us until all this shit is sorted. We can protect you if you’re here.”

“Don’t make it sound like an invitation,” I said dryly.

“It’s not,” Colt replied.

“So, am I a prisoner?” I asked. “I might not have a home anymore, but I do have a job. I can’t just stop showing up. I have a life.”

“Do you want a life? Or do you want to live?” When I didn’t reply, he asked, “Where were you working?”

“I was a server at Spurs.”

“The cowboy-themed restaurant?” Colt asked, a slow smile drifting across his face.

“The one and only,” I stated. “And before you ask, yes, I had to wear cowboy boots and daisy dukes to work.”

Colt chuckled. “My wife owns a bar. We can get you a job there. We can keep an eye on you—you can still have a job and stay busy. You’ll meet the club and fit right in, I’m sure. Life will be sort of normal for you, all things considered.”

I suddenly felt indebted to Colt and his club, and I didn’t like it. But if I wanted protection, I’d have to suck it up and deal. “Thanks. I’d appreciate the job.”

“You’ll be safe here, Sutton.”

“Thank you,” I said with a sigh. “I mean it, really. Not just for offering me a place to stay, but also for what your club did for me.”

“You’re welcome. I think it needs to be said, too, that you can’t talk about this with anyone except Viper or Savage. No one else can know what happened. Not a peep. Do you understand?”

“I understand.”

“I’ll talk to my wife about a job for you,” Colt said, rising from his chair.

“Thanks.”
