“No hesitation, no shame, huh?”

We got to his room, and I pushed open the door. “I was on my way to the bathroom when I got waylaid.”

“I had no idea he was in the kitchen,” Viper said.

“He kind of slipped away, I think. When everyone went outside.”

“You guys talk?” Viper asked.

I shrugged. “Not really. Not about anything important. He asked if I wanted to help him cook, and I said yes.”

“Why? You really care about learning to cook?”

I shook my head. “No. I cared about being a friend. If he needed one.”

Viper didn’t say anything. After a moment, he walked to me, put a hand on my shoulder and pulled me into his arms.

I buried my face in his chest and hugged him, wondering if we’d make it out of this without any more losses.

Chapter40

“I stepped in dog shit!”Lily wailed, completely ignoring the soccer ball that Silas had kicked to her.

Willa glared at Waverly.

Waverly held up her hand. “Don’t look at me. I try not to swear around her.”

Darcy sighed. “It was inevitable.”

It had only been a week, and everyone was already annoyed. Not only were the babies up at different hours of the night, but the brothers were on guard duty rotation every four hours. The dogs thought the entire backyard was their bathroom, and trying to play soccer when there were poop landmines everywhere put a damper on things. Plus, it was full-blown summer now, and the heat and humidity were oppressive. So there were only a few hours in the morning and the evening that weren’t completely miserable. Most of us were stuck inside, either in our tiny clubhouse rooms or in the common areas that didn’t have enough seats.

Expansion on the clubhouse had begun. Construction workers showed up early in the morning, interrupting sleep with their power tools. But it was necessary because we needed more space. The club would only continue to grow.

“Let’s clean your shoe,” Darcy said, holding out her hand to Lily.

Lily bounded toward her mother. Darcy placed a hand on Lily’s cheek and then moved it to her forehead. “You feeling okay?”

“Yeah,” Lily said. “Why?”

“Your cheeks are red.”

“It’s hot,” Lily explained.

“I’m aware,” Darcy drawled. “Let’s get you inside into the air.”

“Can I have some lemonade?”

“Yes.” Darcy looked at her son. “You too.”

“Me too what?” Cam demanded.

“Out of the sun,” Darcy said.

“Mom,” Cam whined.

“That’s a good idea,” Mia said, rising from her chair. “Silas!”

Silas jogged after the soccer ball, grabbed it, and walked to Mia. She slung her arm around her son and said, “I just put Scarlett down for a nap. I challenge you to aCall of Dutytournament.”
