Willa dropped Duke’s hand and stood up. She pressed a hand to her mouth and looked around, her eyes crazed.

“Trash can in the corner,” I said softly.

She dashed for it, leaned over, and upchucked into it just in the nick of time.

The waiting room was empty except for us, so thankfully we weren’t disturbing anyone.

Willa rose and hastily wiped her lips. Duke stood and ate up the space between them. He placed his hand on her back and rubbed it.

She nodded and the two of them left the waiting room.

I didn’t feel like talking and neither did Acid.

Eventually, I got up and began to pace.

I wondered how Darcy was doing. Had she told her children yet, or had she put Lily back to bed? Was she going to wait until morning to tell them? Would one more good night’s sleep really matter when they found out their father was dead?

South Paw.

Gray.

Savage fighting for his life.

The losses were stacking up and people I knew were dying…had died. How many more would I grow to care for only to have them ripped away?

Willa and Duke returned to the waiting room. Willa had a bottle of ginger ale, and she twisted the cap but didn’t remove it.

“Feeling any better?” I asked lamely.

She shrugged. “I’m going out of my ever-loving mind waiting on news about Savage.”

“This is just like him,” Duke said, forcing a smile. “Always so dramatic. Has to do everything with flare.”

Acid asked, “Has anything been decided about Gray’s funeral?”

“Not that I know of,” I said, my throat tight. “When we left the clubhouse, Doc was examining the brothers one by one.”

“This is all so fucked,” he said with a sigh. “I’m going to go have a smoke.”

He left, passing Raze on his way out. Raze came into the waiting room and sat down next to me.

He took a sip of his coffee and winced.

“Hot?” I asked.

“Nah, just tastes like shit.”

I took the cup from him and sipped. “What are you talking about? It’s perfect.”

“Then you can have it. I don’t think I’ll be able to suck it down,” Raze said. He paused for a moment and then asked, “You talk to Rach before you left?”

I shook my head. “She was with Darcy. Why?”

“No reason.” He leaned forward and set his elbows on his knees.

“No reason,” I repeated. “Then why did you ask?”

“She doesn’t have anyone.”
