“Hmm.”

“How are your ribs?” I asked.

“You asked me that an hour ago.”

“Well, I’m asking you again.”

“They’re fine.”

“Take your meds?”

“No.”

I sighed. “Viper.”

“Sutton. I don’t need them.”

“Is this you being a big, strong man?”

“Iama big, strong man and you know it. But this is me not wanting to rely on addictive painkillers for something that’s just inconvenient.”

“Okay,” I said.

“No argument?”

“You’re a grown man. You’ve been taking care of yourself for a long time. Far be it from me to tell you what you need.”

“This is reverse psychology, isn’t it?”

“No psychology. You let me take care of you when you had the flu. For now, that’s enough.”

He reached over and set his hand on my leg. “It’s hard for me. Letting you take care of me doesn’t come easy.”

“Well, we’re supposed to take care of each other, right?”

“That’s the word on the street.”

We finally pulled up to Brooklyn and Slash’s house. It was a beautiful home on the outskirts of the city, giving them more space than they’d have in town.

I’d only just rang the bell when the door opened.

“Hey,” Waverly greeted as she bit into an apple.

“Hi,” I said with a smile.

“Brooklyn’s already dicing and chopping and doing things to vegetables thatsodidn’t deserve it.”

“You’re in good spirits,” I said to her.

She nodded. “I’m better.” She shot Viper a look. “Sorry I cried. I’m not usually a crier.”

“That’s okay,” he said.

“Well, come on in.” She stepped back to let us through.

“Are you going to hang around? You and Sailor?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No. We’re going to go visit Savage and try and get Willa to leave the hospital. She needs food that’s not cafeteria crap.”
