“Is he?” I smiled. “Good.”

“Good? You like him, don’t you?”

“Hey, I thought this was a job interview,” I protested. “Not an interrogation about me and Viper.”

“So, there is a you and Viper?” she pressed.

I shook my head.

With a sigh, she set the clipboard down. “Colt said you needed a job.”

“Yes.”

“He said you’re staying at the clubhouse for the foreseeable future because of some shit.”

“Also yes.”

“He didn’t tell me the details,” she said. “And I don’t ask. That’s kind of Old Lady code. Need to know basis.”

“What’s an Old Lady?”

“A biker’s woman.”

“Oh.”

“Colt said you also have serving experience.”

“I work…workedat Spurs.”

“The cowboy bar?”

“Yeah.” I wrinkled my nose. “I had to wear cowboy boots, a flannel shirt tied up around my middle, and daisy dukes. Made decent money, though. That’s the only reason I put up with it.”

“Well, there are no uniforms at Shelly’s. So dress comfortably.”

“Wait, I have the job then?” I asked with a frown.

“Of course, you’ve got the job.” She cocked her head to the side. “The interview was just a formality. You get that, right?”

“I mean…I guess so?”

“Look, I told you I don’t know the details of your situation, and I don’t need to. When I needed help, the club was there for me. Now we can be there for you. It’s just what we do.” She paused. “I can tell by the look on your face that you don’t believe me.”

“I don’t live in that world,” I quipped. “I’d prefer to know where I stand at all times. I don’t buy into this altruism thing.”

“This isn’t altruism,” Mia assured me. “It’s community.”

“Huh. That’s a novelty for me.”

She smiled. “Don’t worry. You’ll get used to it.”

Chapter7

“Canwe make a quick stop before we head back to the clubhouse?” I asked.

Viper handed me the helmet. “Where?”

“Spurs. I have to clean out my locker and tell the manager I’m quitting.”
