“Hey, Sutton,” Rach said when she answered my call.

“Hey.”

“You okay?”

I paused. “No. No, I’m not okay.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m at home.”

“I’ll be right over.”

“I love what you’ve done with the place,” Rach said as she sipped her tea. She’d left Cash with her mother, and it was just the two of us. It was nice having a private conversation with her, with no other distractions.

“Thanks,” I said. “It’s weird, living with a dude.”

“Never done it before?”

“No.”

“I miss it,” she admitted.

“Can I ask you something? Something really personal?”

Her brow furrowed and she nodded.

“Do you regret it?” I blurted out. “Getting involved with the club? Becoming an Old Lady? Knowing what you know now? That you’re going to raise Cash without a father…”

“Ah,” she said with a slight smile. “I see.”

I nodded.

“You’re questioning the whole thing, aren’t you?”

“No. Actually, I’m not.” I bit my lip. “But I stopped off at Darcy’s this morning. Just to see how she was. And it wasn’t good.”

She sighed. “Yeah. I know. I’ve been by several times this week in the afternoon.”

“She was drinking,” I said. “Heavily. I smelled bourbon on her breath. I was there at nine…”

“Damn.”

“Yeah. I was trying not to think too much about it, you know? I mean, fuck, we just buried her husband…but it’s more than just that. She told me I was a fool for sticking around—and that because I haven’t gotten tattooed yet, that I should just walk away from Viper. From all this.”

“She said that? Really?” Rach asked.

“Really. She was mean, Rach. She didn’t sound like herself. I’m a big girl. I can handle mean. But I’m worried about her.”

“That’s the grief talking—I’m sure of it. I went through a similar phase. But I came out of it. She will too.”

“I hope so. The drinking though…”

“Yeah, that’s not good. Did you tell anyone?”

“Just you. I thought, maybe because…”
