Smoke dealt the cards.
“I really do,” I said.
“Okay, I’ll tell you, but only if you can keep a secret,” Kelp said.
“I can keep a secret. I’m listening.”
“A long time ago someone tried to hurt my family. I took him out to the beach and drowned him in the shallow water. When they found his body a few days later, it was covered in kelp, and the nickname stuck.”
I blinked. And then I glanced at Crow. He shrugged.
“Right.” I cleared my throat and reached for my cards. “Are we playing poker, or what?”
Chapter55
“Good thingwe’re not playing for real money,” Smoke said. “You slaughtered us.”
“Beginner’s luck,” I assured him. “But I definitely want a rematch. Where we play for real money.”
“Name the time and place,” Acid said.
“My house, next week,” I said. “I’ll provide the snacks. You guys bring your wallets and the liquor.”
“You may be an Old Lady,” Crow said. “But in a way you’re also one of the guys.”
“Anybody got the time?” I asked.
Kelp pulled out his cell phone. “A little after five.”
Adrenaline and the liquor were keeping me going. I wouldn’t sleep until I knew Viper was back safe.
“Thanks for letting me crash your poker game.” I stood up.
“You going to try and get some sleep?” Crow asked.
I shook my head. “I’ll be wandering around the clubhouse like a ghost. See you guys later.”
Cool air hit me in the face the moment I stepped into the clubhouse. I grabbed a glass of water and then took it out onto the front porch. The prospects waved to me in greeting, and I waved back as I sat on the steps.
The early morning air was muggy and thick. I swatted at my ear to dispel a hungry mosquito.
I was just finishing my glass of water when I heard the rumble of motorcycle engines. I hastily set my glass aside and stood up, waiting for the prospects to open the gates.
Viper drove through first, followed by Bones and Raze.
I was off the porch before Viper had even cut the engine. I ran to him. He swung a leg over his bike, barely having time to get his bearings before I launched myself at him.
He caught me, holding my butt with his large hands as I wrapped my legs around him.
“You’re back,” I whispered.
“Yeah.”
“In one piece.” I peppered his face with kisses and then finally planted my lips on his.
“Told you I’d come back,” he said gruffly when I pulled away.
“You told me nothing,” I protested.
