“Your parents still around?” I asked.

Viper didn’t reply.

“I know I said you were too broody for me, but I’m totally lying. It works for you, and I find it hot.”

“What are you doing?” he demanded.

I widened my eyes in sham innocence. “I’m not doing anything.”

“I told you I’m too old for you, and you think it’s a good idea to call me hot?”

“Sexy? Would you have preferred the term sexy?”

“Jesus Christ, Sutton.”

“Admit it, you find me adorable and charming, and so you’re using the age thing as a wall between us.”

“Oh, I am, am I? Are you some sort of expert on men or something? At the ripe old age of twenty-two?”

“You’re only thirty-six,” I shot back. “Not sixty. And would you say your age has made you an expert on women?”

“It’ll take you more than a day to figure me out.”

“Challenge accepted.”

“That wasn’t me throwing down a gauntlet.” He sighed. “This isn’t a game I’m playing. I’m too jaded. Too fucked from this life. I’m a mean bastard who’s better off alone. And you’re…”

“I’m what?”

“Not.”

My phone vibrated in my purse, pulling my attention. It was Carla.

“Hey,” I said into the phone. “Give me a second.”

I scooted out of the booth, cell to my ear, and made my way to the bathroom.

“Okay, hi, I’m here,” I said.

“Hey, I was just calling to check up on you.”

“Sweet of you. I’m okay. I think.”

“You think?” she asked.

“Well, I’m kind of sleep-deprived and everything has been happening really fast.”

“Where are you now?”

“At a restaurant with Viper.”

“Viper…how’s that?”

“I don’t even know.” I leaned against the sink counter. “I’m not really sure what’s going on there.”

“Do you want something to be going on there?”

“It seems like a bad idea.”
